Kevin Feige Confirms Marvel Studios Is Working On A Solo ‘Black Widow’ Movie
The Marvel Cinematic Universe just kicked off Phase 3 and everything for that schedule is pretty much set in stone. Phase 4 is a different story, though, and there is plenty of room for new films and new characters to become a reality. One movie that many fans have been asking about is a solo Black Widow film, and since Scarlett Johansson has been such a huge part of the MCU, it only seems right. Now, it looks like it will happen.
Well, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige is all about giving the fans what they want, and he knows it’s also very deserving. That is why he has now revealed that Marvel Studios is committed to bringing a solo Black Widow movie into existence.
As the focus is currently on Captain America: Civil War, fans are already looking ahead to what’s next on the Marvel slate. Kevin Feige spoke with Deadline about a number of things, and a lot of attention is being brought to his words about a solo Black Widow feature film.
“We’ve announced the next nine movies, ten counting Civil War, through the end of 2019. Where we go beyond that are ongoing discussions that we’ll focus on in the next few years because we have a lot to do before then. Of the characters that you’ve just mentioned I would say certainly the one creatively and emotionally that we are most committing to doing is Black Widow…We think she’s an amazing character. We think Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of her is amazing. She’s a lead Avenger and has amazing stories in her own right to tell that we think would be fun to turn into a standalone franchise.”
It should come as no surprise that Marvel Studios wants to take advantage of any popular characters they have already established. Black Widow has been a part of the MCU since Iron Man 2 back in 2010, and most recently, starred in Captain America: Civil War.
Box Office Mojo is reporting that estimates for the domestic opening of Civil War stand at $75.25 million. Adding that to the $291 million made internationally in a week, and the film is already at $366 million when it’s only just getting started.
Scarlett Johansson has already starred in five movies in the MCU, and that includes Civil War. So far, the majority of the other members of the Avengers have gotten one, two, or even three solo films and it’s obvious that Marvel feels as if it is certainly due time for hers.
Even though Phase 3 seems jam-packed through 2019, Inhumans was recently pulled off of the schedule and could end up being where a solo Black Widow film lands. Should Marvel feel no need to rush things, Feige may wait until Phase 4 to give it a release date.

Without Black Widow, the only Marvel film with a female lead is Captain Marvel, which is slated for release in 2019. Ant-Man and The Wasp does have a female co-lead, but many fans are calling for more leading ladies and Scarlett Johansson has certainly earned the spot.
Marvel Studios has found tremendous success with each and every franchise that it brings into existence. As new characters appear, fans make their voices heard and many have let it be known that Black Widow is a solo film they want to see happen. Kevin Feige saying there is commitment toward that movie being made is a good sign that it will end up taking place, and Scarlett Johansson will get her deserving spotlight.
