Chris Brown may be busy celebrating his 27th birthday today, but that didn’t stop the singer from releasing a brand new track, titled “Grass Ain’t Greener,” for eager fans in honor of his special day on Thursday.
Brown unveiled the official title and cover art for “Grass Ain’t Greener” via Instagram on Tuesday before revealing to fans that his latest single would likely drop on his birthday on May 5, writing, “MAY 5 th . I HOPEFULLY WILL HAVE THE ITUNES LINK ON MY BDAY.”
Sure enough, Chris Brown took to Instagram shortly after midnight on Thursday to announce the arrival of his new song before taking to Twitter to share the Apple Music download link for the track.
It didn’t take long for fans to begin gushing over Brown’s newest single on social media, with the hashtag #GrassAintGreener having appeared on Twitter’s trends list within hours of the song’s midnight release on Thursday. While fans continue to send well-wishes to the singer on social media in honor of his birthday and new single release, it appears that some fans have already begun to speculate over the inspiration behind the lyrics for “Grass Ain’t Greener.”
In the track, Chris Brown sings about a former love interest that has seemingly moved on without him despite his attempts to reconcile their past relationship, singing, “You ain’t the girl that you used to be / You say you’re done, you’re moving on. This ain’t the world that it used to be / Looks like you’ve won, looks like you’ve won / Sick of leaving messages on your cell / But you never f*** with none of them / Girl you had somebody that really cared / How you f*** it up, girl it’s not fair.”
Chris goes on to reveal that the girl in question “used to be the one to talk to on the side,” leading some fans to interpret the lyrics as a dig towards Karrueche Tran, given the nature of Brown’s former love triangle with Tran and Rihanna.

“You used to be the one to talk to on the side / Waiting for my love to break up / It’s crazy how you’re a** can walk through every night / Acting like you been a player / That grass ain’t greener on the other side,” Chris Brown sings in the chorus of the melancholy song.
While neither Chris Brown nor Karrueche have commented on fans’ speculation over the track, this isn’t the first time that Brown has been rumored to reference his past romance with Karrueche in his music.
Earlier this year, Chris Brown garnered attention for his former relationship with Karrueche after he named-dropped the model in a remixed version of his “Back to Sleep” single alongside collaborators Usher and Zayn Malik.
Despite Brown’s apology to Karrueche in the track, the duo went on to make headlines in March after Chris took to Instagram to blast Tran’s manager, Jacob York, for attempting to capitalize on the attention surrounding their breakup, ultimately resulting in a heated exchange between Chris and Karrueche on the social media site, Us Weekly reports.
“I wish u the most successful career ever,” Chris Brown began to Karrueche in a now-deleted Instagram post. “But I promise you this, once this ‘TALENT’ you have starts to simmer, so will everyone else including [Manager] Jacob [York], all of your famous friends know u how? How? How? How? Ok. So to end this petty game that’s gonna allow u to book more club appearance and ‘MOVIES’ that go straight to DVD I’ll leave you this *heart emoji*.”
In response, Karrueche slammed Brown for attempting to capture her attention by dropping her name in his “Back to Sleep (Remix)” before encouraging the singer to focus on the positive aspects of his life, writing, “You’re calling me a b**** yet you’re screaming my name in a song about getting back together? CAN ALL THIS PETTY S*** STOP. IT IS SO UNECESSARY. You have a beautiful daughter and so much to live for. LIVE YOUR LIFE and be positive. I am so over the drama!”
Chris Brown’s new single, “Grass Ain’t Greener,” is available now on iTunes and Apple Music.
