MacFarlane new series will be set 300 years in the future, the show follows the adventures of the Orville, a not-so-top-of-the-line exploratory ship in Earth’s interstellar Fleet. Facing cosmic challenges from without and within, this motley crew of space explorers will boldly go where no comedic drama has gone before.
The series originated as a hot spec, written by MacFarlane. Fox knowing the success behind Seth’s creations, quickly snatched it up. Both Fox and 20th TV are overseen by Dana Walden and Gary Newman, long-time supporters of MacFarlane in their previous role running the studio. We first see Seth MacFarlane’s passion for space when he was the executive producer for Fox’s Emmy-winning documentary series Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey.
“I’ve wanted to do something like this show ever since I was a kid, and the timing finally feels right. 20th and Fox have been good to me for many years, and of course, Dana and Gary have been fantastic bosses and true pals, so it was a no-brainer to come to them with the project. I think this is gonna be something special.”
Seth MacFarlene will experience a first in this series as it will the first time he will be acting in a live-action show. Although he does have experience with live-action as he was the director for the movies Ted and Ted 2.
Walden and Newman the Chairmen and CEOs for Fox Television Group were happy to express how they feel about working with Seth MacFarlane for this project.
“For almost two decades, we’ve enjoyed an incredible collaboration with our partner and friend Seth MacFarlane. He’s one of the smartest, funniest and most talented people we’ve ever had the pleasure of working with – a great guy who’s also had such an impact on both television and popular culture. Seth has one of the most original voices – in every sense of the word – and we’ve been waiting for him to bring us a project as special as this one. It’s classic Seth – fresh and funny, incredibly smart, wickedly subversive and undeniably Fox.”
Seth MacFarlene’s other series will still be going strong, just in case you were worried. Family Guy, currently in season 13 has been renewed through the 2016-2017 season. American Dad!, of which MacFarlane is co-creator, executive producer, and voice actor, has been renewed for two more seasons by TBS. Bordertown, where Seth serves as an executive producer, is on Fox. All three series are from 20th TV.

It is clear the combination of Seth MacFarlene and 20th TV is the recipe for a successful series. There is no reason why this new series should fall short.
