‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Spinoff: Kurt Sutter Teases ‘Dark And Beautiful’ New Show
Sons of Anarchy fans may have good reason to rejoice soon. It’s been rumored for some time that showrunner Kurt Sutter had his eye on a Sons of Anarchy spinoff. It’s not surprising, as the FX show introduced us to a story rich with intriguing and dangerous characters.
Well, it appears — via word from Kurt himself, no less — that the premiere date for the Sons of Anarchy spinoff could be closer than you think.
This “dark and beautiful” show will center around the Mayans MC. If you haven’t seen Sons of Anarchy, the Mayans were powerful rivals of the Sons of Anarchy, a group made up entirely of Latino members. A thorn in the side of the Sons for a good portion of the show, the rivalry seemed to cool slightly in the final season — but only in the face of a major gang war.
It’s clear that Kurt Sutter believes the Mayans can provide a rich new perspective on the world in which Sons of Anarchy is set.

It’s not yet clear in exactly how this spinoff will take shape. The Hollywood Reporter previously wrote that the new Sons of Anarchy series will not take place in Northern California. Despite the gang having a strong presence there in Sons, it’s possible this series could be set in Nevada. The details on the upcoming show are still rather vague.
Speaking of “vague,” fans of the original Sons of Anarchy show were hoping that a spinoff of the hit FX series meant that we’d once again see some familiar faces. A possible prequel could even mean the return of some beloved characters who didn’t live through to the end of the series.
Will we be seeing the return of such characters? Unfortunately, what little information that does exist about the Sons of Anarchy spinoff suggests this might not happen. To quote Nerdcore Movement, check the following.
“There’s no official word on when or where the Mayans spinoff would take place, but previous statements from Sutter made it appear that the show wouldn’t interfere with any previous mythology that was already completed during the seven-season run from Sons of Anarchy.
“That means the Mayans Motorcycle Club spinoff could take place in another city far away from Charming with a different chapter entirely. Of course, there’s always a chance that characters from Sons of Anarchy could appear in the spinoff including Mayans MC president Marcus Alvarez (played by Emilio Rivera).”
As the president of the Mayans MC, Rivera’s Marcas Alvarez is the strongest contender for a natural cameo at the very least — and strong role as series regular at best. His presence could be enough to organically introduce a few familiar faces.
However, if this Sons of Anarchy spinoff is meant not to “interfere with any previous mythology,” it’s kind of hard to see how members of the Sons of Anarchy MC could have a major role in this new show — unless it’s a show that will be set after the events of Sons of Anarchy, where new “mythology” is introduced.

Kurt Sutter’s return to work on a new branch of the Sons of Anarchy mythos comes after a not-so-successful attempt at creating a new fictional universe altogether. The Bastard Executioner failed to find the same buzz and ratings as its modern-day predecessor, and FX pulled the plug on the show following the Season 1 finale. FX Networks CEO John Landgraf had said he suggested the then-burned out Sutter “take some time off and rest.”
Perhaps with inspiration back on his side, Kurt Sutter is rested and ready to re-open the book on Sons of Anarchy, providing fans with a show that’s both familiar and uniquely special.
