Kelsey Grammer: Being A Republican Cost Me ‘Boss’ Emmy
Kelsey Grammer won a Golden Globe for his performance as a corrupt Chicago Mayor in the show Boss, but he wasn’t even nominated for an Emmy. The former Cheers star admits that it’s possible that the Emmy Committee didn’t like his performance but believes that it’s a little more plausible that he was snubbed because he’s a Republican in Hollywood.
Last night, Grammer told Jay Leno that he would have received an Emmy nod if it wasn’t for his political views.
“Now explain something to me, you get a Golden Globe for ‘Boss,’ but you don’t even get an Emmy nomination…. Yeah, its hard to figure. It may have to do with several things, honestly, but I think it’s possible, I mean, I’m a declared out of the closet Republican in Hollywood…. Do I believe it’s possible that some young person, young voting actor, or even older voting member for the Emmys, would sit there and go, ‘Yeah, that’s a great performance, but oooooh, I just hate everything he stands for?’”
Leno pointed out that Grammer has a closet full of Emmy Awards from Frasier,The Simpsons, and several nominations from Cheers, but Grammer countered, saying that all of his Emmy Awards came before he publicly stated his political beliefs.
Grammer said:
“Just after that last [Emmy win], I became (a Republican).”
Here’s the video from Jay Leno.
