Robert Downey Jr. Injured While Filming ‘Iron Man 3’
Robert Downey Jr. suffered a slight injury on the set of director Shane Black’s Iron Man 3, according to E! Online. As a result, production has been temporary halted while the film’s star recuperates.
“Robert Downey Jr. sustained an ankle injury on the set of ‘Iron Man 3’ in Wilmington, North Carolina while performing a stunt,” Marvel Studios explained in a statement. “There will be a short delay in the production schedule while he recuperates.”
It’s unclear just how seriously Downey was injured or how long the production delay will last. Unless things take a major turn for the worse, Iron Man 3 is still slated to hit theaters on May 3, 2013.
Although details about the film are sketchy, Downey did reveal the challenges of making the film to MTV News:
“We realized at the beginning of ‘Iron Man 2,’ he’s dying and he goes and has a party, so some [fans] didn’t like him,” he said. “There’s a way to enjoy all that shadowy stuff. So we kept thinking about, ‘What is it like if this guy is in this country? Where else could he go?’ “
Robert Downey Jr. has been a very busy man as of late. In addition tackling the role of Tony Stark is two Iron Man flicks and The Avengers, the prolific actor also has the honor of portraying legendary detective Sherlock Holmes in filmmaker Guy Ritchie’s cinematic adaptation of the iconic sleuth’s literary adventures.
The Avengers, meanwhile, continues to add to its impressive box office total. Domestically, Joss Whedon’s superhero epic has raked in $617 million in ticket sales. Presently, the film’s worldwide total sits at around $1.4 billion. Not surprisingly, Whedon has been tapped by Marvel to direct the sequel, which should find its way into theaters sometime in 2015.
