WWE News: John Cena Talks The Current Product And Says He Misses Blood In WWE Matches

For years now, WWE has had their product toned down a bit so that it would be appropriate for all ages and families. There are no chair shots to the head. Blood will not be shown at all. The product is no longer PG-13 but has been brought to a PG level. Many fans miss the days of the Attitude Era, but they aren’t the only ones. John Cena recently spoke about his boss, the current product from WWE, and the fact that he actually misses blood in matches.

WWE will not allow wrestlers to blade at all anymore. They cannot and will not cut themselves or intentionally make themselves bleed in matches. It is publicly known that there will be serious consequences if anyone is actually caught doing that on purpose.

These days, if a superstar even accidentally gets cut open or starts bleeding in a match, the camera crew will do whatever they can to avoid showing it on TV. Replays shown on future airings will have the footage shown in black and white.

Well, John Cena is not a huge fan of WWE not allowing there to be blood in matches, and he recently told Rolling Stone just as much.

Cena said that he wishes WWE was a program “geared toward me.” He knows that may mean it would need to be rated TV-14 or even get a harsher rating to allow the matches to get a bit “more graphic” which is what the longtime superstar apparently likes.

“For one thing, profanity brought fire out of people with personalities that backed the language. It’s very difficult to say, ‘Oh, you’re being poopy,’ especially when they’re meant to be fighting words. And now, if someone starts to bleed, the referee intervenes to stop the bleeding. But before, you’d just let it fly. Blood is one of the things that made fights cool. Like, you knew it had gotten serious. I understand why we don’t do it anymore. Vince has been a coach to me, a father figure, a boss, and a friend, and his goal and my goal are the same: to make the company be as big as it can be. But yeah, the blood is one thing I miss.”

It’s quite interesting to hear that come from John Cena as he is such a role model for kids and an icon of the company. Still, he’s a wrestler and a performer, and there’s nothing wrong with him liking matches a certain way.

There was a match from last year where John Cena had his nose broken and blood began gushing out of it. He finished the match, and pictures shown on WWE’s website ended up being showcased in black and white, but it added some excitement to the match.

The thing about blood in WWE matches is that no matter who misses it, there’s not a big chance that it will ever return on a regular basis. There is far too much concern about safety, and rightfully so, as well as WWE wanting to make sure they don’t lose viewers and that their product is suitable for all ages.

Linda McMahon recently spoke with CBS Dallas-Fort Worth, and they talked about the WWE’s ban on blood. Considering many hardcore fans of the company and wrestling were upset by the move, she was asked if the company would ever consider moving back to PG-13.

“You can’t never say never, but I think the PG audience is really pretty much where it is.”

John Cena is a big-time role model and has long been the ultimate babyface of WWE. He’s been around wrestling his entire life, though, and he knows what he enjoys. It appears as if he enjoyed the violent Attitude Era style that raised the bar a little bit. It’s hard to say if WWE will ever truly allow blood in matches ever again, but it’s interesting to see that the fans aren’t the only ones that miss it.
