‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Spoilers: Episode 1220 Recap, Part 1: ‘Trigger Happy’ Takes Anti-Gun Stance
On this week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy, the show tackles the controversial topic of gun control. Season 12, Episode 20 of Grey’s Anatomy uses a play on words with the title, “Trigger Happy.” Fans watch as the Grey’s Anatomy doctors “jump the gun” and also witness the fall out of two kids playing with a gun in the home, one accidentally shooting the other. ABC’s episode synopsis gives viewers a quick glimpse into what Grey’s Anatomy Season 12, Episode 20 will offer.
“The doctors work frantically to save a young boy who was accidentally shot.”
At the beginning of episode 1220 of Grey’s Anatomy, two mothers arrive at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital after receiving a call from the police. Each mother has an 8-year-old son that has been involved in an accident, but the police have not told them what happened. The mothers arrive to Grey Sloan before the ambulance arrives. While they are waiting, Dr. Alex Karev, arrives in the emergency room stating he just got the call about the “gunshot kid.” Both mothers instantly break down trying to figure out what has happened and assume a drive-by shooting has occurred. When the ambulance finally arrives, Brandon’s mother learns it was her son that was shot. The other 8-year-old, Peter, arrives in a police car behind the ambulance. The babysitter who was watching both boys also arrives to the hospital and discloses to the mothers that it was not a drive-by shooting. Peter and Brandon had found Brandon’s mother’s gun, and Peter accidentally shot Brandon while they were playing with it.

The Grey’s Anatomy doctors begin assessing Brandon’s injuries and determine there is damage to his spinal chord and he will need to go in for emergency surgery. While they operate, the Grey’s Anatomy doctors argue about whether Brandon’s mother is at fault for her son’s injuries. Some of the doctors even voice that they feel she should be arrested. Dr. Alex Karev is decidedly against having a gun in the home and is surprised to learn his girlfriend, Dr. Jo Wilson, owns a gun. He also becomes visibly irritated when he learns that she is keeping that gun in their home and he never knew about it. The shooting seems to have rocked the world of every doctor in Grey’s Anatomy.
Meanwhile in the waiting room, Dr. Amelia Shepherd comes to talk to Brandon’s mother about the two options Amelia can try to save Brandon’s life. Peter’s mother tries to comfort Brandon’s mom saying she is sure Brandon will be fine. Brandon’s mother immediately fires back and tries to blame Peter for the accident. Peter’s mom lets Brandon’s mom know her son would not be in this predicament if she did not keep a gun in her home. At the end of the episode, viewers learn that Brandon does live, but he will be paralyzed for the rest of his life. Peter is heartbroken and worries his friend will be mad at him. Amelia talks to Peter and makes him promise that when he thinks about what happened, he will remind himself that it was an accident and say, “I didn’t mean to.”
