Nancy Hamilton, Wife Of Former Congressman Lee Hamilton, Dies After Car Accident
Bloomington, IN – Nancy Hamilton, wife of former US Representative Lee Hamilton, died after her own car accidentally ran her over, according to WTHR-TV. Local authorities explain that Hamilton was taking her pet to a veterinarian when the incident took place. Police believe that Nancy failed to properly engage the parking break before stepping out of the vehicle. When she passed behind her car, it rolled over top of her.
Hamilton died as a result of severe head and chest injuries. Her death was confirmed by Police Captain Joe Qualters, The Associated Press reports.
A number of Indiana politicians have issued statements following Nancy’s passing.
“Karen and I were shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Nancy Hamilton,” explained Indiana Congressman Mike Pence. “Mrs. Hamilton and her husband raised a wonderful family and made an enormous contribution to the life of our state and our nation. Our hearts and prayers go out to Lee and their entire family during this difficult time.”
Indiana Democratic Party Chair Dan Parker said:
Our deepest sympathy goes out to Congressman Hamilton and his family as they endure this tragic loss. We would ask that all Hoosiers keep the Hamilton family in their thoughts tonight.”
Lee Hamitlon was southern Indiana’s representative in Congress for over 30 years. He would also serve as vice chairman on the 9/11 commission. Presently, Lee is the director of the Center on Congress at the University of Indiana.
Barbara Garton, a longtime friend who met the Hamiltons in 1964, explained that Nancy was always supportive of her husband’s political endeavors.
“Lee’s prominence was never a problem for Nancy,” she said. “When they moved from Columbus to a Washington suburb in Virginia, she was busy being a mother, a housewife and keeping active with her artistic groups. Everyone who knew Nancy knew she was a quiet, caring, wonderful person.”
Nancy is survived by her husband, three children, and five grandchildren.
