‘Supergirl’ Season Finale Recap — Spoilers: Kara & James Kiss, Teaser For Season 2
A week after Supergirl and The Flash met for the first time in a CW/CBS DC Crossover, Superman’s older/younger cousin was trying to stop Myriad (a mind-control program used by Non and Indigo on National City, the first step in a plan for complete annihilation of the human race) by preparing to face off against her sister Alex Danvers, who was armed with Kryptonite-powered weaponry while under Non’s control.

This week, Supergirl continues her battle against Non and Indigo, but it will require everyone putting their differences aside and working together. That includes Martian Manhunter, Cat Grant, Maxwell Lord, Lucy Lane, and her father Sam, a U.S. military leader.
Supergirl wraps up its first season with a battle that requires something from every major recurring character in the show.

The following contains full spoilers for the season finale of Supergirl (Season 1, Episode 20, “Better Angels”), which CBS first aired on Monday, April 18 at 8/7c.
Episode Recap
As the episode began, Alex (under the mind-control of Non/Myriad) was attacking Supergirl. Martian Manhunter showed up with Eliza Danvers (Alex’s biological mom, Supergirl/Kara’s Earth mom) and the mention of her father was enough to help her break free from Myriad’s spell. Thanks to a collaboration between Supergirl, Cat Grant, and Maxwell Lord, a message of hope was broadcast to the citizens of National City, and they were able to regain their free will. Superman, however, remained unconscious.
Reflecting a common theme in the comic world today, the issue of human/non-human relations was raised as the leader of the U.S. military kept Martian Manhunter in handcuffs, even after he helped save National City. Kara and Alex told their mother that they believed their father was still alive. Just as the world was returning to normal, Lord let everyone know that the signals Myriad had been sending out had returned, this time with the intention of directly killing everyone.

After a quick chat with Maxwell, Supergirl is convinced she will likely die trying to stop Non. She goes around having heart-to-heart talks with everyone, including Winn (about his friendship), Cat (about her being a role model), James (about her wanting him to be happy), and J’onn J’onzz (about fulfilling her purpose to save Earth). When they discover that the evil Kryptonians are hiding in a Nevada desert inside of the abandoned Fort Rozz, Martian Manhunter joins Supergirl as she battles Non and Indigo.

As the intensity of the Myriad signal approaches human-brain-implosion levels (Alex and Maxwell are caught holding hands on the brink of death), J’onn J’onzz rips Indigo in half with his bare hands, and Supergirl wins a super-powered stare-down against Non. Just before Indigo’s body goes limp, she tells the heroes that Myriad can’t be shut down and that everyone on Earth will soon die. A timer shows three and a half minutes.
The only solution appears to be Supergirl flying Fort Rozz far enough into space that it no longer has an impact on Earth — far enough away, that the atmospheric difference will leave Supergirl powerless (and her death, imminent). After willingly making the sacrifice, Alex used the pod Kara took to Earth to rescue her adoptive sister from certain peril. As the show ends, Supergirl’s reputation is completely restored with the American people, government, and military.

Foreshadowing conflict in Season 2 of Supergirl, J’onn J’onzz gives a speech about working together and not keeping secrets, while it appears Maxwell is secretly meeting with Sam Lane, a megahedron (baseball-sized Kryptonian super power-source) in hand. He also talks about the persistence of evil “in the skies beyond our world,” despite the major victory the good guys had just experienced. Cat gives Kara a promotion to a job yet to be determined, as the women make several references to the 80s film Working Girl.
Just after Kara and James get a real serious kiss and the whole group drinks champagne, an explosion in the distance changes the mood. Supergirl and Martian Manhunter investigate, only to find a pod from Krypton had landed. Supergirl’s face reflected a blue glow as she opened the pod. The contents were left as a cliffhanger, with Kara simply stating, “oh my God.”
