Doris Roberts Dead: ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ Actress Passes Away At 90 [Breaking]
Doris Roberts has died. The beloved actress, best known for her role on Everybody Loves Raymond, died in Los Angeles on Sunday, April 17. She was 90-years-old. According to TMZ, a cause of death has not been released. It is unknown if Roberts had any health issues or if her health had declined in recent months.
Roberts was seen recently, caught on camera by TMZ, walking out of the movie Room with her boyfriend, Jack Betts, in October. At that time, Roberts seemed to be in good health and in good spirits. She certainly didn’t look, or act, like she was 90-years-old.
Doris Roberts had been in a number of television shows in her day. According to the Washington Post, Roberts had a very successful career and was recognized for her roles. Roberts played the role of Marie Barone (Raymond’s mother) from 1996 – 2005.
“She won five Emmys, four of them for playing Raymond’s mother Marie — the culmination of several roles as the mother or mother-in-law of the central character in sitcoms.”
Doris Roberts started her career doing television and theater, making her Broadway debut in 1955. In 1961, she made her film debut in Something Wild. From the very start, Roberts was cast in a mother role and she portrayed the part quite well. In 1979, she was cast in another “motherly” role, starring in Angie. It was this show that made Roberts a celebrity, according to Biography.com.
It was Everybody Loves Raymond, however, that made Doris Roberts an international superstar.
“We’re on the air in 171 countries…. This summer I went to went Europe and in every country I went to (except Russia) people knew my name, would scream and say how much they loved me and our show,” Roberts said of her Raymond fame.
Actors Ray Romano and Brad Garrett (who were Roberts’ co-stars on Raymond for several years) have not yet released statements on Doris’ passing. Patricia Heaton, who played Roberts’ daughter-in-law on the show, just tweeted the following.

According to Us Weekly, Roberts got recognition for her roles in other shows as well.
“Roberts won an additional Emmy for her 1982 guest appearance on St. Elsewhere and is also known for roles on such TV series as Remington Steele, Cagney & Lacey, The Middle and Melissa & Joey. She appeared in films including The Heartbreak Kid, Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star and Grandma’s Boy.”
Doris Roberts is survived by her son Michael Cannata Jr., and three grandchildren. Her family has not released a statement of any kind.
Update
Actor Ray Romano released the following statement to People Magazine.
“Doris Roberts had an energy and a spirit that amazed me. She never stopped. Whether working professionally or with her many charities, or just nurturing and mentoring a young, green comic trying to make it as an actor, she did it all with such a grand love for life and people and I will miss her dearly.”
