Lauryn Hill Mugshot Released After Tax Evasion Arrest
Lauryn Hill doesn’t look too happy in her new mugshot. The former Fugees star was arrested earlier this year for three counts of tax evasion and could face up to three years in prison.
So yeah, it’s understandable that she’s a little ticked off in her mugshot.
The International Business Times reports that Hill was arrested after she failed to file tax returns in 2006, 2006, and 2007. Hill reportedly made $1.8 million during that period.
The eight-time Grammy-winner plead guilty to three misdemeanor charges on June 29th and could be hit with a $75,000 fine and three years in prison.
Hill explained on her Tumblr page why she decided to stop paying her taxes in 2005. The singer said that she needed to leave “mainstream society” in order to ensure the safety and well-being of herself and her family. Hill said that she always planned on rectifying the situation but was just never able to get around to it.
“This only stopped when it was necessary to withdraw from society, in order to guarantee the safety and well-being of myself and my family…. My intention has always been to get this situation rectified. When I was working consistently without being affected by the interferences mentioned above, I filed and paid my taxes.”
The Daily Mail reports that Hill is currently free on a $150,000 unsecured bond. She will be sentenced in November.
