Mindy Kaling Vs Stephen Colbert: ‘The Mindy Project’ Star Shared Bloopers Of Colbert
Actress Mindy Kaling went up against Stephen Colbert on his late-night talk show recently in an apparent battle of the bloopers!
In the clip, which was posted to YouTube on Friday, Mindy and Stephen discussed Colbert’s appearance on The Mindy Project when the late night show successor, David Letterman, was enjoying a short break from work. During the hiatus between the end of his Comedy Central show, The Colbert Report, and the official premiere date of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Mindy apparently invited Stephen to play a role on her sitcom.
Stephen Colbert expressed his excitement and overall gratitude for Mindy Kaling calling him to star in a guest role on her show. Colbert even went as far as saying that “it was one of the most fun” he had “on any set everywhere.” However, Mindy Kaling did not really have the same level of excitement in her response to the same situation. It was pretty clear that she had a chip on her shoulder and was finally ready to open up about it live on Stephen’s talk show.
“I’m glad you had fun… I’m glad you brought it up, because I wasn’t going to… I’m very fond of you, okay? I did not think you were very professional when you came on my show.”
Stephen Colbert responded by saying that he was still between jobs at the time, claiming that he was “footloose and fancy free.” The former Daily Show correspondent even grew out his beard during that particular hiatus, a beard that he apparently kept intact for his appearance on The Mindy Project. Mindy Kaling joked that she did not have a problem with his beard at all, though. On the contrary, she claimed that she loved the beard and “thought it was cool.”
However, Mindy Kaling commented that the serious role of Father Michael O’Donnell was not played very seriously by Stephen Colbert during a particular eulogy scene. She even brought footage “all the way from California” of Stephen Colbert performing the eulogy during the funeral scene. He was apparently not able to get through the entire scene without breaking character and laughing uncontrollably.

Stephen Colbert on the @mindykaling show’s Catholic episode just blew my mind with the comedic sparring #genius

Stephen Colbert did not take that mockery lightly. He even had a clip of his own to share with Mindy from the same episode. Instead of breaking character with hysterical laughter, Mindy Kaling broke character by trying to strangle Stephen Colbert while laughing at the same time. Afterwards, she covered her face and could not finish the scene because of her own laughter.
It was not one of Mindy’s scripted lines that caused her to break character, though. It was apparently one of Stephen Colbert’s improvised lines. As a Catholic priest, his character was not supposed to know that Mindy’s character was his friend Danny’s non-Catholic girlfriend.

In the scene, Mindy and Stephen described Danny’s girlfriend – or at least how they perceived her. Mindy claimed that Danny’s girlfriend was not crazy and “had a huge rack.” Colbert responded by saying that “she was pear-shaped and had small breasts.” That was when Mindy Kaling broke character and tried to attack Stephen. In response to that moment being revealed on live television, Mindy Kaling agreed with Stephen’s “distaste,” saying that “you’re not supposed to attack your co-stars” on The Mindy Project, especially when it’s not scripted.
Even though it was clear that the entire “battle” was just two celebrities poking fun at their bloopers and the ability to cause each other to break character, it was still funny to watch for many of their fans and critics.
Just watching @mindykaling and @StephenColbert_ being delightful and hilarious as usual. Also Mindy’s dress is????.

As reported by Moviefone, new episodes of The Mindy Project are set to premiere on Hulu starting April 12. With everything going on between Mindy and Danny, perhaps the struggling couple may need to have another visit with Father Michael O’Donnell in a future episode.
