Carly Rae Jepsen Discusses ‘Boy Problems’ Video And How Petra Collins Got Involved
Singer Carly Rae Jepsen found another way to blend an artistic perspective into her most recent music video, “Boy Problems,” and it’s generating a lot of buzz online.
The “Call Me Maybe” singer collaborated with another artist — photographer Petra Collins — to create the artistry and overall collage of colors used in the video for her newest single from the LP Emotion.
According to Rolling Stone, Carly Rae Jepsen’s match-up with Petra was actually initiated by the photographer. Collins may have thought that she was stepping out on a limb by reaching out to Carly Rae Jepsen. However, Carly claims that she was already a fan of Petra’s work long before that conversation.
“Out of the blue, Petra reached out to ask if she could make a video for her favorite track of the album, ‘Boy Problems.’ What she didn’t know is that I had been following her online via Instagram and other outlets for a while and had become a HUGE fan of her photographs and artwork. I think she has a very gifted eye for a refreshing look at youth and beauty and the way she plays with color always stands out to me. So the answer was an immediate YES!”
Carly Rae Jepsen went on to explain what took place during her first official meeting with Petra Collins in New York.
“We met that first day in New York and were giddy with creating something new together and I am so pleased for how the dark and glittery scenes we imagined turned out. I hope you enjoy it!”
Quite a few people are talking about the new “Boy Problems” music video on Twitter – highlighting favored aspects of the footage such as the number of times a person rolled their eyes.

During an interview with Tavi Gevinson of Rookie magazine last October, Carly Rae Jepsen opened up about her Emotion LP — including a glimpse at her creative process behind the scenes. In her own words, she admitted that she became “a workaholic” while developing the album. However, she claimed that her perspective and overall approach to making new music was essentially pressure-free and apparently did not involve listening to hit songs on the radio.
“I think it was my way of removing the pressure—knowing that I was doing everything that I could be doing to get to the next adventure. I wasn’t really listening to radio music; I don’t find that I listen to the radio all that often, I never really have. Not because I don’t enjoy some of the music that plays there, it’s just I actually listen to music [that’s the] opposite to the music I make for enjoyment, maybe it’s a palate cleanser, or maybe it’s just something odd about me.”
Carly Rae Jepsen further explained that she listens to “sadder music” even though she has the desire “to make quite joyful music” — referring to it as a “strange quirk.” When it came to making this particular album, though, she made it clear that she was not listening to very much music other than the songs that she was creating.
“Boy Problems” adds itself to a growing list of other popular songs and music videos from Carly Rae Jepsen’s most recent album release. In addition to making headlines with “I Really Like You” and “Run Away with Me,” the 30-year-old singer also recorded a brand new version of the Full House theme song for the Netflix hit series, Fuller House.
