A New ‘TMNT’ Trailer Comes Out Of The Shadows On Monday
And so, the teenage anthropomorphic mutant ninja turtles are to reveal more of themselves this coming Monday.
Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies have released a teaser trailer for the sequel to 2014’s lukewarm Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, the film takes place a few years (?) after the events of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This time around, the turtle brothers come into conflict with scientist Baxter Stockman, who was hired by The Shredder to create mutants for the Foot Clan. These mutants are, you guessed it, Rocksteady and Bebop, a pig and rhino. Formerly human men part of a street gang in New York, Shredder hired these two to do his bidding — and provide additional comical relief. (As if the TMNT Universe could get any funnier.)
This is the first time Rocksteady and Bebop are to appear on the big screen. They were supposed to pop up in 1991’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of Ooze, but were replaced by Tokka and Razhar, a gray wolf and an alligator snapping turtle. Rocksteady and Bebop were also planned to be included in 2014’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but they didn’t make the final cut. (Perhaps that’s why the film suffered terribly, holding a 21 percent Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.)
The trailer doesn’t give too much away. We get a glimpse of each of the brothers: Leonardo holding one of his katanas, Donatello extending his staff, and Michelangelo chowing down on the greatest invention in the history of mankind — and the turtles’ favorite delicacy — pizza. Puzzlingly, Raphael is missing from the teaser. (Perhaps the “official debut trailer,” as it’s dubbed, will allude to why he’s missing.) In between each of the shots of the film, we get the phrase, “Get ready for the exclusive trailer debut this Monday.”
At the end of the teaser, the film’s title slams into the frame. Though only fifteen seconds long, the teaser is hilarious, primarily because of Michelangelo: as he’s munching on cheesy pizza, everyone glares at him. At his confusion, he replies with, “Are we—Are we doing something?” whilst still chewing. (With his mouth open. Gross. But classic Mikey.)

I don’t know about you, but I’m pumped for the next installment in the TMNT cinematic universe. I’m one of the few who enjoyed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, even though it wasn’t that great; I guess I’m just a sucker for abnormally tall anthropomorphic turtles trained in classical ninjutsu. If you’re curious — or interested — you can view the teaser trailer above. Or, you can wait until Monday. I mean, it IS only a couple of days away. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is set to release worldwide on June 3.
