Hugh Dancy Gets ‘Fifty Shades Darker’ Than ‘Hannibal’ Role

Hugh Dancy is used to playing rather dark characters thanks to his starring turn in Hannibal. Now the actor is taking on an even darker role, as he has been confirmed to be taking on a role in Fifty Shades Darker. Hugh Dancy won’t necessarily be getting into the nitty-gritty of the film franchise, as he is going to be playing a psychiatrist in the sequel to Fifty Shades of Grey. The news of Dancy signing on comes after most people believed that movie had already filled all of the positions that needed casting.

Fans of Hannibal will likely find it quite interesting to see what Dancy can do with an entirely different of subject matter. In that show, Hugh Dancy is looking to try to figure out why certain murderers and criminals are committing their crimes, as well as how. In Fifty Shades Darker, he will be serving as a therapist for Christian Grey and will likely just be trying to help figure out why Christian is the way he is. That includes trying to get to the bottom of why he’s got such interesting desires when it comes to how he treats his lady friends.

Hugh Dancy’s character, John Flynn isn’t exactly a central character, but he’ll have a decent amount of screen time in the follow-up to the hit adaptation of E.L. James’ erotic novels. The Hollywood Reporter was the first to break the news of Hugh Dancy joining returning stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan. In this sequel, Johnson’s Ana will have to deal with the return of more than a few of Grey’s former flames. This is likely when Dancy’s Flynn will step in and help the couple find the romance and genuine affection the pair feel for each other throughout the book series.

Entertainment Weekly earlier reported Hugh Dancy is going to be joined by quite an impressive cast that includes Kim Basinger, Bella Heathcote, Eric Johnson, and Tyler Hoechlin. Basinger is set to play the big time former love of Christian Grey, who actually introduced him to the S&M world that he currently inhabits and that is coming between his new love interest and the billionaire to some degree.

Dancy caps what has been a flurry of changes for the new movie, including a brand new director. James Foley is taking over for the final two flicks in this series, as Sam Taylor-Johnson departed shortly after the first film in the trilogy hit the movie theaters. Hugh Dancy isn’t supposed to play a character that plays much of a role in the third film either, but one has to wonder if some things might be getting changed up, considering the franchise was able to ink such a veteran actor.

The British budding star seems to be drawn to weirdly dark programs and roles when it comes to the small screen. His brand new, post-Hannibal series The Path just kicked off on Hulu. In that series, Hugh Dancy is a very charismatic member of a massive cult that seems to have some less than straight forward motives and background. Dancy makes his first appearance in that program as the leader of a group from the cult that is helping to deliver aid to a town that was just hit by some kind of disaster. While he plays a character that is far more outgoing and “normal” than he does in Hannibal, there are also some layers that Hugh Dancy has made a career out of. Now we’ll just have to wait and see how Hugh Dancy plays his new role.
