‘iZombie’ Showrunner Rob Thomas Teases A ‘Massive’ Season Finale

Warning: This article may contain spoilers for iZombie.

The season finale for iZombie draws nearer and, as it does, executive producer Rob Thomas dishes on what can be expected in the last episode of this year’s installment; an episode which the iZombie showrunner says will be even bigger than last year’s shocking finale. Also coming out this week are details about next week’s iZombie episode for those fans too eager for news to wait for the episode to air.

Last year, iZombie ended their freshman year with a pretty epic end to the season’s long-running story arc of Major Lilywhite (Robert Buckley) and his investigation into Blaine DeBeers (David Anders) and his Meat Cute operation. The finale was explosive in more ways than one, bringing an end to secrets, as well as to Blaine’s gourmet brain business. At the time, showrunner Rob Thomas and his creative team had created the season finale with the idea that it would be “as big as iZombie gets,” but that was without the knowledge that iZombie would be renewed by the CW network for another year.

Now, as Season 2 nears its end and Season 3 looms in the not so distant future, Thomas has even bigger plans for the closure of this year’s iZombie season.

“But this year’s finale is a massive episode,” the iZombie showrunner said. “It answers things and sets up what will happen in Season 3.”

When asked for more details on the finale, it seemed at first that Thomas wouldn’t be compelled to give fans any clues, but perhaps there are a few hints in his words, or in reading between the lines.

“We like to think of each season as a big story… we want to have a finale each year that’s going to be the completion,” Thomas said. “We knew [that this season would] be a big Max Rager season and Blaine [David Anders] would try to take over Seattle’s criminal world.”

Rob seems to be giving fans more than it at first appears, as he alludes to conflicts with both Max Rager CEO Vaughn Du Clark (Steven Weber) and Blaine. Could there be a big three-way battle coming with Liv Moore (Rose McIver) and friends caught up in the middle between Blaine and Vaughn?

Before fans reach that promising final iZombie episode, viewers still have two more episodes and there seems to be as much going on in those two iZombie episodes as there is in the finale. First off, series showrunner is bringing in a bit of cheeky irony in casting Matchbox 20 frontman Rob Thomas in a cameo as himself.

Thomas, the singer, will perform a song from his solo album at a Super Max launch party and Vaughn Du Clark will no doubt be tripping all over himself in praising the singer. Before the launch party, Vaughn will somehow get Thomas to sing a jingle for the new Max Rager product in Episode 17, “Reflections of the Way Liv Used to Be”. The iZombie episode may also bring fans back to the Utopia boat party that launched the iZombie series, as Rob Thomas has hinted the series will be revisiting that event this season.

Also coming in during the next iZombie episode, Liv will have to eat the brains of an overachieving student, someone who was very much like Liv, before she became a zombie. The episode summary suggests that Liv will revert back to her ambitious, career-minded workaholic of her past, which may prevent her from interfering when Blaine seeks out help from Ravi (Rahul Kohli).

The next episode of iZombie airs on Tuesday, April 5 on the CW network.
