NFL Rumors: New York Jets Could Acquire Brian Hoyer From Houston Texans
The New York Jets are still in the market for a starting quarterback with the lack of new deal for Ryan Fitzpatrick. They were hoping to bring Fitzpatrick back, but that doesn’t appear likely to happen anytime soon. Brian Hoyer is on the trade block for the Houston Texans and there is a chance that the Jets could look into acquiring him.
According to multiple reports and Jason Cole of Bleacher Report, the Jets are holding the line with Fitzpatrick and could turn their attention to Hoyer if nothing gets done.
Hoyer would make a lot of sense for the Jets, who are coming off of a season in which they nearly got back into the playoffs. They have the offensive weapons around the quarterback position that they don’t necessarily need a star. Fitzpatrick certainly isn’t a superstar quarterback, but he fit well into the system that Todd Bowles and the Jets are running.
Putting a quarterback on the field with wide receivers like Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker normally means success, but adding in a dual-threat running back like Matt Forte this season will make the job even easier for the starting quarterback.
Last season with the Texans, Hoyer put together a very good season. He completed 60.7 percent of his pass attempts for 2,606 yards, 19 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions. Hoyer has long been on the same level as Fitzpatrick and it is very likely that New York would get very similar production from him as they did last season at the position.
At 30 years old, Hoyer has had a very intriguing career to this point. He started off as a no-name quarterback with the New England Patriots and didn’t play in his single season with the Arizona Cardinals either. It wasn’t until the 2014 season with the Cleveland Browns that he broke out and showed that he has the talent to be a starter in the NFL.New York appears to be a serious playoff contender heading into the 2016 NFL season and they can’t afford to sit around and hope that Fitzpatrick decides to return after exploring other options.
It likely wouldn’t take much for the Jets to acquire Hoyer from the Texans. Houston won’t be asking for too much compensation in return for the veteran quarterback.
Brock Osweiler was signed by the Texans in free agency this offseason and will be the long-term starter in Houston. Hoyer wants to continue playing as his career is winding down, and the Jets are one of the few teams that he could continue starting with.
Looking ahead at the upcoming NFL season, the Jets have slowly worked their way into being a serious contender. They have rebuilt their roster very well and the coaching staff is one of the most underrated in the league. If they can bring in a solid game-managing starter, then there is nothing holding them back from making the playoffs and being a threat to compete for a Super Bowl appearance.
Obviously it will be interesting to see what the Jets end up doing in the next few weeks. They could decide to up their offer to Fitzpatrick and make sure that they re-sign him, or they could acquire Hoyer. There is also a chance that they try to get one of the top quarterbacks in the 2016 NFL Draft. No matter which way they go, the Jets have to bring in a player who is ready to step in and lead now.
Hoyer may not be a flashy name, but he knows how to get the job done. That is all that a team can ask for and it should definitely make the Jets interested in acquiring him.
Do you think that Brian Hoyer would be a good fit for the New York Jets? Could he be the type of quarterback that leads the Jets to the playoffs?
