San Francisco State University: Issue of Appearance And Ethnicity Unfolds As Black Student Confronts White Classmate For Wearing Dreads

An issue of appearance and ethnicity took fold in the halls of San Francisco State University on Monday.

Since then, multiple videos have surfaced online showing a black female confronting a white male for wearing dreadlocks, which she claimed was “her culture” [hairstyle], sparking an argument between the two.

“You’re saying that I can’t have a hairstyle because of your culture? Why?” The white male asked the female who confronted him while standing in a hallway stairwell.

“Because it’s my culture,” the woman said. “Do you know what locks mean?”

The incident goes on to the point where the male disregards the female and tries to walk away from the situation, but is repeatedly held back by the individual who believes the appearance of this man’s hair is a higher symbol of disrespect to her culture.

In any right, the black female is committing the same type of bigotry that is the essence of the racial struggle going on today towards the minorities and refugees that currently live in our country.

The notion that an individual’s culture, nation, or what have you is strictly for their benefit and use is the repellent that keeps us– as people –from becoming a more unified community.

The first few videos posted on the web stated that the black female was a faculty member at the University, but those claims have since been reported false.

SFSU has since released a statement regarding the incident and have confirmed that the individuals involved in the incident were not associated with their faculty; and while the University pledges to be an advocate of free speech, they will still move forward with an internal investigation of the incident to uphold the conduct of those who are enrolled in their University.

“We are aware of the video made of an incident which occurred on campus yesterday afternoon. University police were called to the scene of the incident when it occurred. The two individuals involved in the incident are not San Francisco State University employees. Further, no criminal charges have been pressed at this time to the University’s knowledge.”

“San Francisco State University promotes the rights of the campus community to engage in free speech, but does not condone behavior that impedes the safety or well-being of others. We are taking the matter seriously and will promptly and thoroughly investigate this incident through applicable University channels, including our campus student conduct procedures.”

San Francisco State University was founded in 1899 and is the only master’s level public university serving the San Francisco County and surrounding counties: San Mateo and Marin. An estimated 30,000 students enroll to the University each year, and it has total an excess of 236,000 graduates that have been an integral part of the economic, cultural, and civic fabric of the San Francisco Bay area and beyond.

According to the University’s website, the student population consists of a 25 percent white population and 5 percent black population. Students of Asian descent make up the largest demographic of the undergrads that attend the public University at 35 percent.

San Francisco is long known to be a city that is historically diverse and open-minded when it comes to race. The issue at hand brings to light the current racial struggle that has been ongoing with the #blacklivesmatter movement and the recent concern over Donald Trump’s campaign that has been a beacon for bigotry and white-supremacy as he looks to become the GOP nominee for president of the United States.
