Powerball is the nation’s most popular lottery jackpot game, followed by Mega Millions. Known for having large jackpots, Powerball made world history when on Jan. 13, the jackpot rolled to an astounding $158 billion. Powerball tickets cost $2 per play while Mega Millions tickets cost $1. It’s important that those who play Powerball determine whether they want to add the Power Play multiplier to their ticket. the multiplier costs and additional $1 and can increase the amount of non-jackpot prizes. There are nine ways to win Powerball and those who match the Powerball number always win a prize.
Powerball consists of choosing five numbers represented on white balls that range from the numbers 1-69. Next, you choose a red ball or the Powerball between the numbers 1-26. Those who match all five white balls and the red Power Ball win the jackpot. The odds of winning the jackpot or grand prize is 1 in 292,201,338. When there is a grand prize winner, the Powerball jackpot resets to $40 million for the next draw. Those who win the Powerball jackpot have the choice of collecting their winnings upfront, in a lump sum payment, or having an initial payment, followed by 29 annual installments. Those who choose an upfront, lump sum will receive the cash value rather than the amount of the jackpot. When there are multiple Powerball jackpot winners, the winners split the amount of the jackpot.
The second-tier Powerball prize consists of choosing all five white numbers but missing the Power Ball. The prize for winning the Powerball second-tier prize is $1 million. Those who choose to add the multiplier can increase their win from $1 million to $2 million. The odds of winning the second-tier prize is 1 in 11,688,053.52.
The third-tier prize consists of matching four white balls plus the Powerball. The prize for this is $50,000, but those who add the Power Play multiplier can greatly increase the amount of their winnings. For those who play Powerball on a regular basis, adding the Power Play multiplier is a wise choice.
Everyone who plays Powerball should keep in mind that only tickets that are in good condition and have readable numbers will be accepted for payout. This means that as soon as you purchase your Powerball ticket or tickets, you should sign the back of your tickets immediately, then ensure they are kept in a safe place. The worst thing that could happen is to win the lottery or Powerball jackpot then have your claim denied because your ticket was either lost or damaged.
