Dallas Cowboys Rumors: Veteran Free Agent Running Back To Visit Team On Monday

The Dallas Cowboys really have not made a very big splash in the 2016 NFL free agency season so far, and they may not at all. A few moves have been made here and there, but not a whole lot. Still, there are numerous veteran players out there still looking for teams and one is a veteran running back from their own division. Alfred Morris of the Washington Redskins is set to visit the team on Monday, and could look to make Dallas his new home.

Washington told the veteran that he could head out into free agency and test the waters to see what was available to him. With more than a week that has gone by, nothing has happened for Alfred Morris as of yet, but now there are moves being made.

Pro Football Talk is reporting that this is the first visit of free agency for Morris, and an important one. Even if the Dallas Cowboys aren’t going to necessarily need a starting running back, as they have Darren McFadden, they would like to take one from the Redskins.

Morris is a very impressive running back and has opened the eyes of a lot of teams since he joined the NFL back in 2012, as NFL.com reports. Still, 2015 was the least productive year of his career, and it was a very drastic drop-off.

He opened his career with 1,613 yards on the ground in his rookie season and he topped that with 13 touchdowns as well. The years 2013 and 2014 also saw him top 1,000 yards in both seasons even though his touchdown numbers decreased to seven and eight respectively.

Last season, Alfred Morris rushed for just 751 yards and one touchdown on the ground. Still, every player has a bad game or season now and then, and Morris’ first three seasons show what he is capable of doing. It also doesn’t hurt that he hasn’t missed a single game in four seasons.

Now again, the Cowboys likely wouldn’t be looking at Morris as a starting running back, but pair him with Darren McFadden.

In 2015, McFadden was one of numerous running backs that the Dallas Cowboys attempted to get off the ground, and the only one that stuck. He ended the season fourth in the NFL in rushing, and looks to be the starter going into 2016.

Pairing Morris and McFadden together could give a huge boost to the Cowboys’ offense and a great combo behind Tony Romo.

Alfred Morris is a two-time Pro Bowl selection, and his numbers dropped off so much last year due to sharing the load with Matt Jones. The Redskins are obviously ready to hand over the reins to the second-year back and let Morris see who else has interest.

Just because Alfred Morris is testing the free agent waters doesn’t mean his time with the Washington Redskins is done. If he doesn’t sign with Dallas or another team, Redskins’ president Bruce Allen said, “we’ll see what happens with us” and if they’d bring him back.

The Dallas Cowboys really haven’t done a lot in free agency so far this year. They did re-sign linebacker Rolando McClain which was a huge priority. They also brought in defensive tackle Cedric Thomas from the Philadelphia Eagles and re-signed James Hanna, Kyle Wilber, and Charles Brown.

Alfred Morris’ visit to the Dallas Cowboys on Monday isn’t a sure thing that will have the running back signing with the team. He still could end up back with the Washington Redskins or another NFL team entirely, but he would provide a good one-two punch if he landed in Big D.
