Gwen Stefani has undergone a lot of changes in recent months. Along with going through a public divorce with Gavin Rossdale , Stefani ignited a heated romance with Blake Shelton. While the pop star gets ready for the release of her newest album, Stefani opened up about the struggles she faced following her divorce and how Shelton helped her get through the tough times.
According to Us Magazine , Stefani and Rossdale were married for 13 years before announcing their divorce last summer. The couple had three children together — Kingston, 9, Zuma, 7, and Apollo, 2 — and decided to split after Rossdale had an affair with their children’s caregiver, Mindy Mann.
Being cheated on is certainly not an easy thing to go through. In an interview with the New York Times , Stefani admitted that it was a particularly rough period in her life that left her in a state of shock.
“If I could, I would just tell you everything, and you would just be in shock. It’s a really good, juicy story,” she stated.
As to what she was thinking at the time of her divorce, Stefani revealed that things were pretty bleak.
“I am dead, actually. How do I save myself? What am I going to do? How do I not go down like this?” she recollected.
Fortunately, Stefani had a method of dealing with the emotional distress. In fact, she turned to music as an outlet to vent her frustrations and deal with her emotions.
“I have to make music out of this. That’s what God wants for me,” Stefani explained. “Being in that room and being creative, it was the only place that felt good — I was like, ‘I love the smell of this room.’”
In addition to her music, Stefani also revealed that her relationship with Shelton has helped her deal with some of the fallout of her divorce. This is especially true considering how Shelton went through his own divorce with Miranda Lambert a mere month before Stefani’s breakup.
“[He] had been going through literally the exact same thing in literally the exact same time frame,” she shared. “I’m not going to say I’m not still picking up the pieces and every day isn’t a challenge. I’m still in shock. But it’s an awesome time.”
Apparently, Shelton’s influence reached beyond Stefani’s personal life and made it onto her upcoming album. In fact, Hollywood Life is reporting that her newly released single from the album, titled “Misery,” is all about her romance with Shelton.
Gwen Stefani doesn’t mention Shelton’s name directly in the track, but the lyrics make it clear that Shelton is the subject of the tune. In particular, Stefani likens her newfound love to drugs and admits that she is “thinking things I’ve never felt before.”
According to Billboard , Stefani started out her newest album with a collection of pop songs that had been created for her. However, she didn’t connect with any of the material and decided to start from scratch with her own songs.
“I started to think, well, I’ll just curate a record, and I’ll do it like every other pop girl does,” she said. “Every song that people would write for me felt like me 12 years ago, me 10 years ago. And lyrically they could never touch my heart, ever.”
Considering the tracks that have been released so far, Stefani used her experiences in the past few months as a source of creativity. Fans will have to wait to hear the end result but can rest assured that Stefani didn’t hold anything back, good or bad.
Stefani’s newest album, titled This Is What the Truth Feels Like , is set for release on March 18.
