Lorde’s Makeup Artist Shares Step By Step Tutorial For Lorde’s Famous Shimmering Smoky Eye Makeup

Lorde was stunning during her David Bowie tribute at the 2016 Brit Awards. And there was one detail, other than her magnificent voice, that allowed the “Royals” singer to deliver such a powerful performance. And that’s her shimmering smoky eye makeup, according to Billboard.

And now Lorde fans around the world have the opportunity to experiment with this makeup for themselves. In her recent interview with Billboard, Lorde’s makeup artist Amber D. shared the tutorial for this makeup.

To achieve Lorde’s onstage makeup, Amber’s goal was to create a “worn-in shimmering smoky eye” makeup to keep the singer’s look “chic and polished but still cool.” So the makeup artist made all elements of the makeup complement each other and be in harmony with Lorde’s middle-parted straight hair.

As to what products she used, Amber reveals that she used Marc perfecting face primer as a base to moisturize and smooth out Lorde’s skin, then she applied Marc Genius Gel foundation on the middle section of the face with the help of the Smith Cosmetics #115 brush.

“This creates an even base that doesn’t look too heavy on TV and also in real life. Brows were combed up to look full using Marc Brow Tamer.”

In order to emphasize Lorde’s bright eyes on stage, Amber used Marc Highliner Gel in Blacquer as a base as well as applying it to the eyelids with the help of Smith Cosmetics #247 blending brush.

Then the makeup artist added depth and sparkle to Lorde’s eyes by using Marc eye shadow palettes in multiple layers. In order to create a harmonious look, Lorde’s makeup artist noted that it’s important to diffuse the edges to not leave any hard lines behind.

Lorde’s 2016 Brit Awards makeup also featured Marc Velvet Noir mascara to achieve that false eyelash effect. Amber also recommends using Marc powder in Mirage to contour the cheeks, as well as opt for Marc lip pencil Honeybun to achieve the sheer look on the lips. However, you’ll also need to apply Marc lip gloss Pretty Thing to make your lips look natural and moisturized.

Lorde’s makeup artist reveals that the whole makeup process usually takes from half an hour to 45 minutes. But since Amber has worked on Lorde’s makeup for a while now, she manages to get this kind of makeup done in less than 30 minutes.

“When you work with someone so often, you know the facial features so you know what will work and what won’t, so if you need to work quickly it is much easier.”

Amber also revealed that Lorde did a quick change in her makeup for Brit Awards after-parties. In particular, the makeup artist changed Lorde’s eye makeup, using Marc Jacobs Magic Marc’er Precision Liner.

Amber also discussed what makeup tricks usually work best on Lorde and what must be avoided in order to not mess up the “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” singer. According to Amber, Lorde is a fan of “the less the better” makeup routines, so she is always excited about subtle elements in makeup that look chic and powerful at the same time.

But there is one thing that always works well on Lorde, and that is applying a sheer glowing base with a creamy highlight, which gives the skin a natural glow.

Meanwhile, Lorde’s fans can’t get enough of the singer’s photo taken next to Taylor Swift and her brother Austin at the Vanity Fair Oscars party two weeks ago, according to New York Magazine. It was even noted by the magazine that the photo looks like it could be the cover of a collaborative album between Swift and Lorde.
