‘The Vampire Diaries’ Cancelled? Ian Somerhalder And Nina Dobrev To Reunite For The Series Finale
The seventh season of The Vampire Diaries is finally coming to an end. Although the season was the first without Nina Dobrev’s Elena Gilbert, the show managed to forge into new territory by focusing on Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). However, with the future of the series in question, will Dobrev return one last time to reprise her role and give the series a proper end?
According to Celeb Dirty Laundry, there are some hints that the series will not continue past its current season. Along with the network moving the hit series to a new time slot, Somerhalder recently took to social media to try and drum up support for the second half of Season 7. Is this an indication that Somerhalder is worried about the fate of the show?
The CW has yet to confirm a cancellation or a renewal for an eighth season. Apart from Somerhalder’s social media activity, Julie Plec recently answered some questions about the fate of the series in a fan led interview with Entertainment Weekly.
When asked if the show would live to see another season, Plec didn’t confirm or deny the rumors of a cancellation. Instead, she expressed her hope that the network would renew the show and that the cast and crew would have another opportunity to work with each other. “Well I sure hope so!” she said. “I know we have a very large crew and cast of people who really want to be doing what we love on this show next year, so keep your fingers crossed.”At the same time, Plec previously told E! Online that the fate of the show is directly dependent on Somerhalder and Wesley. Plec is willing to stick with the series as long as her two lead actors stay on board. Fortunately, once Somerhalder and Wesley decide to part ways, Plec is willing to come together and conclude The Vampire Diaries with a proper ending.
“When they are ready to be done telling the story, I will put my pencil down and say that I’m done too, and then we will work together to end it in the best way possible. There’s always things that could go wrong in that scenario, there’s always pressure that can be put on, but…the three of us I’d like to think will make the creative decision of when the show should be over.”
Whether or not the series moves forward with another season is yet to be determined. Considering how the show has changed a lot since Dobrev’s departure, it would not be surprising if the network decided to end things. Hopefully, the network will give Plec and her team a heads up if the series is going to be cancelled.
If the series is cancelled after Season 7, fans can rest assured that Dobrev will make an appearance during the upcoming finale. In fact, during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Plec revealed that Dobrev is more than willing to return to the show in order to wrap up her character’s storyline in a more fulfilling way.“Nina has always said that if there’s something for her to do in the series finale that she will be there to do it. When she left, she said, ‘I want to see this character to its end at the end of the show, so I can’t wait to come back and put her to bed again.'”
The Season 7 finale of The Vampire Diaries, “Days of Future Past,” is set to air on April 1 on The CW.
