‘Fallout 4’ Survival Mode Mod Show Bethesda Game’s Sleep Saving System
It looks like Fallout 4 fans will be getting a taste of the upcoming Survival Mode system update via a “Beds The New Bonfire” mod. Since power naps of sorts are key to this upcoming system for the purpose of saving games, it’s nice to get a taste of what it’s like by the game modding community, according to Game Rant.

Currently saving the game can be done at any time, via both quick save and manual. The beds or bedrolls wherever you may find them in the wasteland provide the opportunity to get your Vault 111 dweller’s health back up to snuff. The future Survival Mode update makes it challenging to find a place to rest your head, and according to a Reddit user, the type of bed also makes a difference in how well-rested you’ll be.
Fallout 4 game fan and mod aficionado, KarmaCoin, wanted to indeed take advantage of the upcoming Survival Mode experience, so he created the piece himself. KarmaCoin coined the term “Beds The New Bonfire” because it was inspired by the Dark Souls game wherein bonfires were utilized as check points. It was in that game where those stations were intended for healing and resting, according to Gamepressure.
This wasn’t the first time modders for the Fallout franchise attempted survivalist related challenges. Between the time periods following Fallout 3, but prior to New Vegas, Fallout mods for the purpose of utilizing health and healing items such as those Fancy Lad Snack Cakes, Nuka-Cola, and other numerous edible items were required for basic human needs for thirst and hunger. The mod name here was called the “Primary Needs (Realism – Food and Water),” according to Geek.
The Fallout 4 “Beds The New Bonfire” mod is available at Nexus Mods and the description is as follows.
“I got impatient waiting for survival mode so I made this mod which makes it so you can only save your game by sleeping in a bed. I’ve been playing it with some other increased difficulty mods and its absolutely terrifying, reminds me of playing Darksouls. This mod removes the Quicksave and Save option from the MainMenu and also disables the quicksave hotkey.”
Note: In order to allow the “Beds The New Bonfire” mod to be utilized, you would need to go into your settings and turn off the “autosave” feature, otherwise the game will continue to save automatically which will override the mod’s functionality.
The future Fallout 4 Survival Mode update should have many other features when it comes out in its final form, as reported by Eurogamer, via files within the game discovered by a Reddit user. In addition to sleep saving, Sole Survivor wellness upkeep is also coming. Food and water will be necessary and then there’s a slant on radiation sickness. Fatigue is a factor that impacts rads in the same fashion as action points.
It’s actually surprising, considering the environmental conditions of the Fallout 4 wasteland, that the aforementioned health and wellness concerns weren’t already implemented at launch. There’s also disease acquired from uncooked food and unpurified water to consider, and also a lowered immune system is possible.
The Fallout 4 game’s upcoming Survival Mode update even addresses weight as it considers even smaller amounts like ammo or items that don’t currently have weight like the Mini-Nuke. So there is the matter of encumbrance to address in the Fallout update.
There’s also the Adrenaline Perk for improved combat and in order to achieve this, the Lone Wanderer would require kills. Keep in mind, oversleeping can put your adrenaline levels on a downward slope.
Also, stay on the look out for the Fallout 4 Automatron DLC available this month.
