Big Ten Tournament Results: Michigan Going To 2016 NCAA Tournament, Big Ten Brackets Shaken [Breaking]
Big Ten tournament results have yielded a huge upset. The No. 1 seed in the Big Ten tournament brackets just lost in the quarterfinals. No. 8 Michigan just beat No. 1 Indiana on a three-pointer in the final seconds of the game. The win not only sends Michigan to the Big Ten semi-finals, but has secured the Wolverines a spot in the 2016 NCAA Tournament. With a 22-11 record and another strong victory added to the resume, Michigan won’t be overlooked by the NCAA Selection Committee this year.
With the Indiana Hoosiers leading 69-66, the Michigan Wolverines had less than a minute to catch up. With just 48 seconds left on the clock, Michigan’s Duncan Robinson connected on a three-pointer to tie the game. Indiana had a chance to take the lead again, but Michigan’s Kameron Chatman stole the ball and then hit a huge three-pointer with just one second left on the game clock. Michigan escaped with an unlikely victory over the top seed in the tournament. These Big Ten tournament results have improved the resume for Michigan by quite a bit.
As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Michigan beat Northwestern in the second round to advance in the Big Ten tournament brackets. It put the No. 8 team up against the No. 1 team in what amounted to a must-win game for the Wolverines. Michigan had been on the bubble for an invite to the 2016 NCAA Tournament, but based on the early Big Ten tournament results, the school is now right in line for an invitation. Now Michigan has a shot at receiving an automatic bid by winning two more games to close out the conference tournament.
There are three more quarterfinal games in the Big Ten tournament brackets for Friday, March 11, but it will be difficult for them to be as exciting as the third-round opener. No. 4 Purdue vs. No. 12 Illinois is getting ready to start. The later games have No. 2 Michigan State vs. No. 7 Ohio State at 6:30 p.m. ET. Then, the day ends with No. 3 Maryland vs. No. 11 Nebraska about 25 minutes later. The Big Ten quarterfinals are stacked with intriguing games, but the second-round upsets may have made the road a bit easier for several top seeds.Going back to the Michigan win over Indiana, it was definitely a team effort. Four starters scored in double-figures for the Wolverines, led by 17 points from Zak Irvin and 15 points from Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman. The heroes of the day are certainly going to be Duncan Robinson and Kameron Chatman, though, as the late three-pointers propelled the team into the next round of the Big Ten tournament brackets. As for the downfall of Indiana, it looked like the Hoosiers were ready to advance, but just couldn’t defend in the final minute of the game.
Despite this huge upset and the Big Ten tournament results from the first two rounds, the Michigan Wolverines aren’t the biggest underdog remaining in the brackets. No. 12 seeded Illinois knocked off Minnesota and Iowa in unlikely fashion. Now Illinois will play Purdue in the second game from March 11. The winner of that game will advance to play in the semi-finals against Michigan. Would any college basketball expert have predicted a Michigan vs. Illinois game in this tournament?
The Big Ten tournament brackets have the semi-final games scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, March 12. That leads up to the Big Ten Championship Game at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 13. The winner of the title game gets an automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA Tournament later in March. While it looked like either Indiana or Michigan State was the favorite, the latest Big Ten tournament results suggest that the Michigan Wolverines are ready to crash the party.
