Ian Somerhalder And Paul Wesley To Appear At Denver Comic-Con, Will They Announce Then End Of ‘The Vampire Diaries’?

The Salvatore brothers are headed to the Denver Comic-Con this summer. Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley have officially been confirmed to join a host of other celebrities at the event. With the season finale set to air just prior to the Denver Comic-Con, will the two Vampire Diaries stars announce the end of the beloved series?

According to Celeb Dirty Laundry , there are a few reasons why The Vampire Diaries might be headed for cancellation. The biggest reason centers on the fact that Nina Dobrev is no longer a part of the series. Without one of the show’s main characters, many fans expected the series to wrap things up fairly quickly.

Instead, the series continued on for another season, though it did suffer in the ratings department. In fact, The CW recently decided to move the series to a new time slot after low ratings in the first half of Season 7. With the series returning for the second half of its current season, Ian Somerhalder took to social media to ask fans to tune in.

While Somerhalder’s actions could be taken as a simple attempt to remind fans of the new time, they are also an indication of how much the show has slipped in the last year. Furthermore, Somerhalder himself might not be willing to stick with the show for much longer, especially if his plans to start a family with Nikki Reedare true.

Whatever happens with Somerhalder, E! Online is reporting that his decision is tied in with the fate of the series. In fact, Julie Plec recently told the outlet that she will continue with the show as long as both Somerhalder and Wesley are on board.

“I finally realized that my destiny on this show, creatively, is tied in to Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley. And I mean that in a really good way,” she stated. “As long as those boys who I now consider my friends want to keep telling the story, then I won’t walk away from telling the story.”

If this season is the last, Plec went on to promise fans that she would work with Somerhalder and Wesley to craft the best possible ending. In the end, the decision on the show’s future appears to rest with Plec and her two lead men.

According to TV Line , Plec is hopeful that the series will continue past its seventh season. However, she did admit that the series could end fairly quickly, especially if Somerhalder or Wesley decided to depart.

“I basically committed to Ian and Paul that when they’re ready to be done, I’ll be done,” she shared. “They could be ready very soon, or they could really want to stick it out. Right now, that’s up to them. I’m with them as long as I feel like I can keep telling stories for them.”

At this point, it isn’t clear what Somerhalder or Wesley plan on doing after the end of this season. Whether or not they both decide to hang it up for good is unknown, but the Denver Comic Con could be a potential place to make such an announcement. After all, the event will be host to a score of The Vampire Diariesfans, many of whom have questions of their own about the fate of the show.

According to The Gazette , Somerhalder and Wesley will appear at the event with the likes of Karl Urban, Carrie Fisher, Stan Lee, Ralph Macchio, Jenna Coleman, C. Thomas Howell, and Alex Kingston.

The seventh season of The Vampire Diaries continues Friday nights on The CW.
