Dolly Parton Dishes On 50th Wedding Anniversary Plans And Upcoming TV Movies
Country music legend Dolly Parton is planning a very special 50th wedding anniversary with her husband, Carl Dean. The pair will be renewing their vows in a ceremony complete with the fancy wedding dress Dolly never got to wear.
The Boot reports Dolly Parton announced her anniversary plans at a recent press conference. Parton also shared some details about her wedding to Carl in 1966. Parton had just signed with Monument Records. Knowing Dolly was engaged and wanting to protect his investment, the head of the label asked Parton to postpone her marriage for at least one year.
“He was investing quite a bit of money in me to try and get me started in the business. He heard that I was engaged, and we had already sent out our wedding invitations, and so he called me in the office and said, ‘I would really appreciate it if you wouldn’t get married for at least a year, so I can kind of make sure I can get a return on my investment, because I want you to be free to work and do whatever you need to do.'”
Never being one to let anyone stop her from doing what she wants, Dolly Parton married Carl anyway. They had their wedding in Ringgold, Georgia, hoping to keep it out of the Tennessee newspapers.
Dolly’s mother made her a white dress, and the marriage took place in a Baptist church. The only ones in attendance were Parton’s mom, the preacher and his wife, and the witness.
It's official! I'm hitting the
road later this year and I’m keeping it #PureAndSimple! https://t.co/2wqA0wem9T pic.twitter.com/eFj6XRhurN— Dolly Parton (@DollyParton) March 7, 2016
That won’t be the case this time around. Dolly is being fitted for a wedding dress, and Carl is on the hunt for the perfect suit. According to On Air with Ryan Seacrest, 70-year-old Parton joked that while her upcoming tour and album are titled Pure and Simple, “That dress ain’t going to be pure nor simple.”
It sounds like fans may get to see Dolly’s daring dress because she plans to have “a bunch of pictures” taken of the big event. Parton said she may sell some to the “rag mags” to raise money for her organization, Imagination Library.
“I missed having a wedding dress and all that. I’m being fitted up for that. He’s looking for suits. We’re going to take a bunch of pictures. Might even sell some to the rag mags and take the money and give it to the Imagination Library. That’s my plan.”
In addition to her new album and first tour in 25 years, Dolly Parton is busy working on more television projects, as reported by Wide Open Country. Her movie Coat of Many Colors, which will be available on DVD in May, received rave reviews when it aired in December. Parton is now working on a movie based on her hit “Jolene.”

Dolly said many fans who loved the faith-based story Coat of Many Colors have expressed concerns over Jolene being “trashy.” Parton makes no apologies about the fact that, yes, the character Jolene is going to be a husband stealing “adultress.”
“I’m a girl of many colors and my songs are my songs and my stories are my stories, but there will certainly be some redeeming qualities in it, but it’s not going to be like The Coat of Many Colors. So when it’s about Jolene stealing the husband, she’s gonna be an adulteress! So that’s how that’s gonna be so — I’m not in it! I’m not being her! I might look like I might be, but I’m not doing it!”
Following Jolene, Parton will be working on another faith-based television movie based on her song “The Seeker.” Dolly describes this story as something along the lines of Highway to Heaven and Touched by an Angel. There are plans to turn it into a television series if the movie is well-received.
