‘Marvel’s Agent Carter’ Season 3 Renewed Or Canceled Over Ratings? Hayley Atwell Cast For ‘Conviction’
Will we see Marvel’s Agent Carter Season 3 renewed or canceled now that Peggy Carter has been given her Hollywood ending? Some reports seem to believe there is good reason to believe the TV show will be renewed for a third season and actress Hayley Atwell believes the finale leaves plenty of room for more Agent Carter episodes. At the same time, Atwell recently announced she was signing up for the cast of the ABC TV show Conviction, giving some good reason to wonder whether the low ratings will force the studios to have Agent Carter canceled.

The last time we saw Peggy Carter she had wrapped up her case in California and wrapped herself around Daniel Sousa. But the two love birds cannot exactly dance off into the sunset since there is still plenty of potential adventures to be had with Mr. Jarvis in tow. While Whitney Frost is no longer a threat after losing both the zero matter and her mind, Chief Jack Thompson was targeted and apparently killed (although it could be argued he can survive a shot to the right lung if he receives medical attention quickly). Dottie Underwood is apparently imprisoned in New York once again, although those circumstances could change quickly in Agent Carter Season 3.
The main reason that the studios may wish to proceed with the story of agent Peggy Carter is based upon her role in the creation of S.H.I.E.L.D., the organization that rose from the ashes of the SSR. The Council of Nine is associated with Hydra, so the lapel pin key found by agent Carter is probably the most important hint that the story for Agent Carter Season 3 will be moving in that direction. When Hayley Atwell spoke to IGN, she indicated that the Agent Carter Season 2 finale was intended to wrap up certain events, but it’s also intended to create openings for the third season.
“I think there’s so much more to explore,” she said. “The finale suggests a couple of cliffhangers that would make us go, ‘Oh, what does that mean?’ The finale doesn’t suggest that that’s it and they live happily ever after; that’s the end. We know that’s not the case. They’ve done it in a very clever way which wraps up and that gives the audience a very satisfying conclusion but they’re not quite finishing it and leaving it there.”
To put that interview into perspective, it was published shortly before the Season 2 finale was aired. The actress admits the decision to have Agent Carter renewed largely depends on the ratings and the networks.
The writing seems to be on the wall although the networks have not made anything official yet. A report by Comic Book Resources is something of a buzzkill since the low ratings seem to lean toward having Agent Carter canceled.“Season 2 was plagued with low ratings, and its finale only mustered a paltry 2.5 million viewers and a 0.7 in adults 18-49…. It started off strong with 6.9 million viewers, but nearly each week viewership has dropped: 5.1M, 4.6M, 4.2M, 4.25M, 4.15M, 4.02M (Season 1 finale), 3.18M (Season 2 premiere), 2.9M, 2.77M, 2.66M, 2.39M, 2.5M, and 2.35M (Season 2 finale).”
The website claims their own sources told them that Agent Carter “Season 3 is not a done deal yet” but a report from Nerd Reactor claims the networks are having Agent Carter renewed.
“A source within the studio has revealed to us that ABC has decided to stick with the show and will be renewing Agent Carter for season three.”
While there is a lot of uncertainty in regards to the future of Peggy Carter, we do know for a fact that Hayley Atwell will be returning to TV as Carter Morrison, a young lawyer in Conviction. The new ABC character was described by Variety as “the brilliant but rebellious daughter of a former president, who is blackmailed into taking a job as the head of Los Angeles’ newly created Conviction Integrity Unit.”
