‘The 100’: Showrunner On Purpose Of Lexa’s Death – Grounders And A.I. Connection
On The 100 season 3, episode 7, Lexa died. This shocked many fans, and it certainly was not expected. However, the writers did something interesting with Lexa’s storyline. It turns out that the somewhat primitive ways of the Grounders are not quite so primitive at all. Spoilers for The 100 season 3 revealed that Lexa’s death is already serving its purpose. Also, the showrunner talks about the connection between the Grounders and A.I.
The existence of A.I. on The 100 definitely was a strange twist to the season 2 finale. Throughout season 3, viewers have seen a bit more of the artificial intelligence being named A.L.I.E. She makes it sound like everything will be perfect, and after seeing the City of Light, Jaha follows A.L.I.E. now. Not only is Jaha doing what A.L.I.E wants on The 100, but Raven is also on board, as well as some of the other Arkadia residents.
In a previous spoiler for The 100, the Inquisitr speculated that Clarke’s discovery of a “strange truth” might have something to do with A.L.I.E. It turns out that we were only partially correct. It does have to do with technology, but we had no idea there was a device that was implanted in Lexa’s neck. The 100 writers definitely threw us a curve ball.

When it all began, it seemed that the Grounders storyline, and the introduction of A.I, was written for two different shows. As seen on the last episode of The 100, it is all starting to come together. The two will eventually intertwine, and already have some sort of connection. So, what does The 100 showrunner and executive producer Jason Rothenberg have to say about this?
“When I came up with the idea of a technological reincarnation as a way to explain the Grounder mythology,” Jason Rothenberg told TV Line, “that the Commander is a reincarnated position, that was something everyone got excited about. You can’t tell a story about reincarnation, technological or otherwise, without that person dying first.”
As fans remember from The 100 season 3, episode 7, after Lexa died, Clarke watched in horror as something was removed from the nape of her neck. It resembled a little alien creature or a tiny octopus, as Hypable put it. However, it was actually at an advanced technological device. Clarke was told that it was the Commander’s spirit.
Going back a few episodes on The 100, Lexa previously confessed to Clarke that the previous commanders spoke to her through dreams. Now Lexa is part of that and will be speaking to the future commanders. The device holds all of Lexa’s dreams, memories and wisdom. Does that mean fans will see Lexa in some form on future episodes of The 100? Rothenberg wouldn’t say, but instead, teased that “anything is possible.”

As for why Alycia Debnam-Carey’s character was killed off on The 100, the actress also stars on Fear the Walking Dead. With the second season of FTWD premiering on AMC this spring, it was tough for the actress to do two shows at once.
“I had to beg, borrow and steal to get AMC to allow us to use her for as many episodes as we did, and I knew I was going to lose the use of her after episode 7,” Rothenberg explained about Alycia Debnam-Carey’s exit to TV Line. “It’s a laborious process to use an actor that’s working on another show, so that had a big part to do with our thinking this season.”

The other issue that fans are concerned with on The 100 is how Clarke will react to Lexa’s death. Titus meant to murder Clarke, but Lexa got caught in the middle. As she drew her last breath, she asked that Clarke’s life be spared. Although the Grounders are good about keeping their word – as long as it is to the benefit of their people – will Lexa’s dying request be honored? How will Clarke deal with Lexa dying on The 100? Not to mention that Lexa sacrificed her life for Clarke? In the past, Clarke has not dealt with guilt well, but perhaps she has learned that not everything is her fault.
Will Lexa’s death on The 100 play into why the episode is titled “Terms and Conditions” or does this have to do with Pike? Perhaps Kane will somehow take over and try to negotiate with the Grounders?
What do you think will happen on the next episode of The 100? Season 3, episode 8, titled “Terms and Conditions” airs March 10.
