Amy Adams Talks Salary Received On David O Russell’s ‘American Hustle’
Actress Amy Adams has recently opened up to British GQ about her salary on David O. Russell’s American Hustle. This is the first time the actress has talked about the issue, the same gender pay gap issue that her American Hustle co-star Jennifer Lawrence has written about in a previous essay. Amy Adams has basically revealed that she was aware of how much she was being paid and knew her salary was not as high as her male co-stars.
“I didn’t speak about it before, and I’m probably not going to speak about it forever because I disagreed with… not Jennifer per se, but people who had opinions on how women should go about negotiating,” Amy Adams explained.
Adams decided to stay quiet on the matter, and was willing to take the salary she was given so that she could be in the film. And while she was okay with that decision, she still recognized the underlying gender pay gap and didn’t feel great about it.
“The truth is we hire people to negotiate on our behalf, men and women… I knew I was being paid less, and I still agreed to do it because the option comes down to do it or don’t do it,” said Amy. “So you just have to decide if it’s worth it for you. It doesn’t mean I liked it.”

Perhaps Amy Adams prefers to let someone else take care of the salary negotiations. In her essay, Jennifer Lawrence discusses more than just how men and women are paid in Hollywood and talks about society’s problem with internalized sexism in general. After reading the piece, Adams states that she is proud of Jennifer Lawrence for doing what she did.
“What I liked is that it was not necessarily about getting paid, or not getting paid,” Amy said of what Jennifer wrote in her essay. “It’s like [women] have been conditioned to not be controversial, to not cause problems. It’s about finding your voice.”

Sony Pictures has had their emails hacked and the information that has been leaked reveals that their females actors are being paid less than men. It’s through these very emails that Jennifer Lawrence’s American Hustle salary has been revealed.
Amy Adams says knowing about the salary difference between herself and her male co-stars shouldn’t be all that surprising, as this is something most women in Hollywood are keenly aware of. It seems that in most cases, women will stay quiet about the issue, as well men, even if they’re aware of the gender pay gap. But, Jennifer’s essay certainly lit an undying fire in Hollywood that certainly won’t go away anytime soon.
Adams also talked about her experience on the set of American Hustle, particularly when director David O. Russell allegedly made her cry.

This seems to be a normal process on Russell’s sets, as he’s been known to be a tyrant on the set for years. Amy said that it was something she had to work through most days and it was pretty tough. She also noted that Lawrence had no problem handling Russell. At one point, she referred to Jennifer as “teflon.” That isn’t surprising, as Lawrence and Russell have worked together now on three different films. All three of those performances have earned Lawrence Oscar nominations, with a win in 2013 for Silver Linings Playbook.
It was an experience Amy Adams was not looking to bring home with her after a day on the set. In her own words, she doesn’t like having to see others treated poorly, insinuating that may have been going on while filming.
