GOP Debate 2016: Donald Trump Attacks Mitt Romney; Romney to Save GOP From Trump?

The GOP Debate has gotten a lot more interesting after Mitt Romney and Donald Trump Jr. decided to have a one-on-one bout, which no longer appeared to be on the professional level.

Former U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney called Trump a “fraud.” Mitt Romney added that Trump would lose the elections on Nov. 18 if he is faced with Democratic candidate Hilary Clinton.

“Here’s what I know. Donald Trump is a phony, a fraud,” said Mitt Romney.

“I would vote for Marco Rubio in Florida, for John Kasich in Ohio, and for Ted Cruz or whichever one of the other two contenders has the best chance of beating Mr. Trump in a given state.”

Donald Trump did not back down and said that the Republicans were not treating him “fairly.”

“He was begging for my endorsement. I could have said, ‘Mitt, drop to your knees’ — he would have dropped to his knees.”

“That was a race, I have to say, folks, that should have been won…. I don’t know what happened to him. He disappeared. He disappeared. And I wasn’t happy about it, I’ll be honest, because I am not a fan of Barack Obama, because I backed Mitt Romney — I backed Mitt Romney. You can see how loyal he is.” Donald Trump added.

Republicans Fall Behind Romney

When the numbers on Donald Trump’s supporters begin to rise, it had become apparent to Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz that they are losing the race, according to New York Times.

However, there is a brewing force of republicans who decided to invest millions for the so-called “anti-Trump ad campaign.”

One hundred nine Republican national security experts wrote an open letter publicly declaring their “opposition to a Donald Trump presidency.” They pointed out Trump’s views on power, Muslims, terrorism, immigration, international alliance and more. These are a couple of the pointers they wrote:

  • His vision of American influence and power in the world is wildly inconsistent and unmoored in principle.
  • His hateful, anti-Muslim rhetoric undercuts the seriousness of combating Islamic radicalism by alienating partners in the Islamic world making significant contributions to the effort.
  • Controlling our border and preventing illegal immigration is a serious issue, but his insistence that Mexico will fund a wall on the southern border inflames unhelpful passions, and rests on an utter misreading of, and contempt for, our southern neighbor.
  • His admiration for foreign dictators such as Vladimir Putin is unacceptable for the leader of the world’s greatest democracy.
  • He is fundamentally dishonest.
  • His equation of business acumen with foreign policy experience is false. Not all lethal conflicts can be resolved as a real estate deal might, and there is no recourse to bankruptcy court in international affairs.

Though Donald Trump has been winning a couple of Republican states, there are more and more people who stand behind Mitt Romney. Mitt Romney is not the ideal presidential candidate has he has loopholes himself, according to David Stockman. However, he is the only Republican who is vying against Donald Trump.

The Late Show‘s Stephen Colbert also announced his support to Mitt Romney. In the latest episode of the show, “Road to the White House,” Stephen Colbert considered Mitt Romney as the “not-so-secret weapon that could usurp the party’s presidential nomination away from Trump,” according to Rolling Stone.

“Donald Trump’s big win on Super Tuesday has made it clear that he is the likely nominee of the Republican party, and that has sent the Republican establishment into a deep, deep panic,” Colbert said Thursday.

With all of the buzz about Donald Trump’s competition for the GOP nomination, people are wondering if Mitt Romney would reenter the candidacy to save the Republican Party.

Even with the positive encouragement on Mitt Romney to run again, the former presidential candidate told Today host Matt Lauer multiple times that “there are no circumstances” that he can foresee that possibility.

“I am not running for president, and I won’t run for president,” Mitt Romney concluded.
