Jason Derulo Speaks Out About The Jordin Sparks Lyric In His New Song, ‘Naked’
After the release of Jason Derulo’s latest single, “Naked,” last month, fans have been speculating about one particular lyric that seems to be directed at his ex-girlfriend, Jordin Sparks. Well, the wait is finally over.
In an exclusive interview with HipHollywood, Derulo stated he didn’t have much to say about the song but during the time when he wrote it, “I said exactly what I felt.” In the song Derulo sings, “Yeah I broke up with my ex, I ain’t talk to her since/The only time I need the ‘Sparks’ is when I light up my spliffs.”
Derulo and Sparks broke up back in 2014 after dating for three years and both said the relationship ended badly. Soon after the breakup, Jason called into Ryan Seacrest’s radio show to discuss the falling out.
“There was a lot of tension in the relationship for a lot of different reasons,” Jason Derulo said. “When you stop having more good times than bad time it’s time to call it quits.”
“I don’t have time for certain people and certain things,” Sparks explained, at the end of the first track. “So, bye Felicia.”
Different than her previous albums, the songs on this mixtape, were filled with a lot of feeling and R&B vibes. Derulo seems to be planning something similar with his own mixtape, due to release this summer.
Jason Derulo told HipHollywood it was raw emotion he wanted to let out on “Naked,” and Derulo’s new mixtape will include songs and lyrics like “Naked,” revolving around past relationships.
“It’s not about a record sale,” Derulo said. “It’s about me saying what I’ve always wanted to say.”
It’s clear Jason Derulo plans to make sure his voice is heard with his new music and his videos. Derulo, himself, directed the music video for “Naked,” which was also released last month. The video also starred singer K. Michelle, and in the video, Derulo and K. Michelle are stripped down, leaving almost nothing unrevealed.
Derulo isn’t Sparks’ only ex that has something to say, though. Sparks and Sage the Gemini dated for almost a year before breaking up last month. Following the break up, Sage seemed to want Jordin back, posting an image of the two of them on Instagram with a heartfelt caption.
“You the only girl I can call at 3 in the morning,” he wrote. “The only girl that loves me the way you were supposed to.”
The picture has been deleted and since then Sage’s opinions have completely changed. In a leaked audio that Sage’s ex-fiance posted online last week, Sage implies his relationship with Jordin started as a publicity stunt and says their relationship was “horrible.”
Jordin then posted a cryptic photo on Instagram on March 1 that seemed to be in response to the audio clip.
“There’s so much more to life than finding someone who will want you,” she wrote in the image. “You need to fill yourself up with love. Not anyone else.”
Well, Jason has since found someone else to fill him up with love. Despite, the mention of Derulo’s ex in his new music, it’s clear Jason is ready to move on and leave the past behind. Derulo started the year off with his new girlfriend, model Daphne Joy, at South Beach, and the pair have been inseparable ever since. Jason even went to New York to support Daphne as she walked in New York Fashion Week. Check out the happy couple below.
