‘Outlander’ Star Sam Heughan Is ‘Hopeful’ For A Season 3
Following Outlander’s epic success in Season 1, few doubted that the show would be renewed for a second year. However, with filming for the second season only recently wrapping up, rumors have circulated that Season 3 is already in the works. Luckily, Sam Heughan recently took to social media to clear up the confusion.
According to Scotland Now, Heughan recently commented about the upcoming season but quickly found his words taken out context. In the confusion that followed, many thought that Heughan had confirmed that the series had already been cleared for a third season.
In a message on his Twitter page, Heughan attempted to clear up the matter of a third season. For starters, Heughan stated that Season 3 was not on the table yet and added that everyone was optimistic that the network would eventually approve another year.
“No. I did NOT confirm season 3 I’m afraid,” he wrote in the post, “though we are all hopeful!”
All things considered, it would not be surprising to see the show go well beyond three seasons. After all, the series was one of the more popular shows on television in its freshman year. Furthermore, the Irish Examiner is reporting that actress Caitriona Balfe is willing to stay on the show for however many years it lasts.
“I don’t forget examples of people dying to get off shows that make them successful and you never see them again,” Balfe told the outlet. “Opportunities like this don’t come along very often.”
Along with finishing the upcoming season of Outlander, Balfe recently wrapped up her part in a new movie with George Clooney and Julia Roberts, titled Money Monster. The film is not Balfe’s first venture into the movie industry, although her involvement in Outlander will surely limit her availability for future projects.
Meanwhile, with production finished for Outlander, Balfe and Heughan took the time to answer a few questions from fans. In the video, which was posted to Entertainment Weekly, the two stars addressed a wide variety of questions, including which emojis their characters would use and how their hair would look in the 1980s.
“Oh… Jamie would rock the ultimate mullet,” Heughan stated, while Balfe added that Claire’s hair would entail the big “bump,” or “hair band hair.”
In terms of their emojis, Heughan shared that Jamie would use all the monkey ones and the “big thumbs up.” The two were also asked which planet they would visit if they could time travel to the year 2131.
“Uranus,” Heughan quipped.
“Such a child,” Balfe added playfully, saying that Venus would be her favored destination.
The Q&A session followed a steamy photo shoot for Balfe and Heughan set in the backdrop of 18th-century France. As fans are well aware, the new season will see Jamie and Claire travel to Paris in order to stop the Jacobite rebellion. Along the way, the time-traveling couple will encounter plenty of challenges, including mingling with the locals and dealing with Jamie’s past trauma.
In celebration of the conclusion of filming, Heughan posted a picture on Twitter of an old bottle of Scottish whiskey with the caption, “Thank you @VisitScotland for beautiful bottle @Glengoyne 15yr! Great way to celebrate last day. Slainte! #scotspirit.”
For her part, Balfe also shared the news on her Twitter page, thanking the cast and crew for their help with the new season. “Well that’s a wrap on Season 2. It’s been an amazing season with the best cast and crew. Hope u all enjoy it!!!” she wrote.
The second season of Outlander is scheduled to air April 9 on Starz.
