‘Outlander’ Wraps Filming On Season 2, Star Sam Heughan Says It Is A ‘Whole New Show’
The second season of Outlander has officially finished its final leg of filming. With a little over a month away from the season’s highly anticipated, what can fans expect for Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) in the new season? According to Heughan, things will be very different this season for the time traveling couple.
Heughan announced the end of production in a special message on Twitter. In his post, Heughan thanked everyone involved in the filming process and voiced his enthusiasm for the new season.
“Big thank you to everyone who has worked on Season 2 @Outlander_Starz… All crew, extras and behind the scenes. What a year! #LastDay.”
Balfe joined in on the celebrations with a Twitter message of her own. In addition to echoing Heughan’s excitement, Balfe announced a special birthday message for one of the crew members on the show. “Happy Birthday Andy!!!! Last day and your birthday,” she wrote alongside an image. “Double celebrations!!” The conclusion of filming is welcome news for fans, most of whom can hardly wait another month before the next season returns to television.
Meanwhile, Scotland Now is reporting that Heughan recently revealed a few spoilers about the second season. While those who have read the books already have an idea about what’s in store, Heughan explained how the new season is completely different than the first and how it’s really a story of two halves.
“It’s certainly a whole new show. it’s split into two halves and the first half is certainly going to be a new world that Jamie and Claire are in… It’s Paris, Versailles and the Court of King Louis and it takes them a while to adapt to this new world and new fabulous costumes.”
Jamie and Claire travel to Paris, France, in Season 2 of Outlander. This year is an adaptation of the second book in Diana Gabaldon’s series, titled Dragonfly in Amber, which follows Jamie and Claire as they attempt to change history. Their mission is to stop the Jacobite rebellion and help preserve Scottish culture.
Along with the new setting comes a drastic change in costumes for the characters. This is one element that makes the new season stand apart. Furthermore, the new setting also presents a number of different challenges for the main characters. This includes infiltrating the high society of Paris and dealing with the traumatic events of last season. All the while, Claire is dealing with her first pregnancy.
Speaking of Jamie and Claire’s children, the new season will introduce the couple’s daughter from the future, Briana. Briana is expected to play an important part in the new season, especially in the very beginning. Sophie Skelton is set to play the role of Briana, while Richard Rankin has been cast for the part of an older Roger Wakefield.
Apart from the new and exciting setting in Paris, the upcoming season will also see a major time jump. According to Entertainment Weekly, the characters will start in 1945 before going all the way back to France in 1743. With such a large time period explored, Heughan and Balfe were questioned about current trends and how their characters would react to modern times.
In particular, the two Outlander stars were asked about what kind of emojis their characters would use if they traveled to the 21st century. In response, Balfe stated that Claire would “probably use the little s*** with the eyes.” For his part, Heughan stated that Jamie would use monkey emojis and a big thumbs up.
Outlander’s second season is scheduled to premiere on April 9 on Starz.
