80-Year Old Grandma Fights Off Gun-Wielding Robbers With Fruit
New Bedford, Massachusetts — An 80-year-old grandma showed two robbers just how tough she could be when she fearlessly began pelting them with fruit after one of them pistol-whipped her in the head.
My Fox Boston reports that the grandma, Otillia Martins, was shopping at her family’s store, Continental Market, on Friday, when two men came in around 1:30 p.m. and held the store up at gunpoint.
Martins did attempt to thwart the robbery, even running after the suspects, despite the fact that one of the men hit the 80-year-old Portuguese immigrant with his gun. The feisty grandma received a laceration from the hit, but did not give up easily.
News One notes that Martins was not one to give in easily either, despite the laceration to her forehead. She immediately began pelting the robbers with apples and mangoes. Stunned, the robbers tried to stop the fruit-wielding grandma from hitting them, but decided to eventually abort the robbery.
The suspects in the robbery were able to get away with $500 before they ran, but the cops caught up with them just 15 minutes later. Martins son-in-law and owner of the Continental Market, Manny Nogueria, was able to ID the perpetrators. The suspects in the attempted robbery were Eduardo Torres-Lopez, 22, and Jesse DosSantos, 32, reports My Box Boston.
Police found the gun they believe was used in the robbery in a second floor apartment off of Belleville Avenue. DosSantos and Torres-Lopez both face charges that include armed robbery and robbery while masked, carrying a dangerous weapon, and assault and battery on a person over the age of 60.
The fruit-wielding, tough-as-nails grandma declined medical attention after the altercation.
