‘Scandal’ Season 5 Spoilers — Tony Goldwyn Reveals What’s Next For Olivia And Fitz
Season 5 of Scandal has proven to be a roller coaster year for President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn). From his divorce from Mellie (Bellamy Young) to his romance and eventual split with Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington), Fitz’s second term has been anything but easy. With things continuing to get worse for Fitz and company, Goldwyn recently sat down with Parade and offered a few hints at what’s next for Fitz and Olivia.
For starters, Goldwyn revealed that everyone previously close to Fitz is now working on their own individual goals and facing down different challenges in the process. This includes Mellie’s bid for the presidency and everything a presidential campaign entails. On the whole, this has left Fitz isolated without many friends to lean on.
“I can tell you that Fitz is all alone… Olivia is trying to move on with her life, I am not sure what that means. Mellie is gearing up to run for president, and the presidential campaign is beginning to generate momentum. Some other candidates emerge, who challenge Mellie, in addition to some Democratic candidates, so all the characters get very interested in that, including Cyrus, Sally Langston (Kate Burton) and some others.”
Of course, Fitz’s main issue centers on his recent split with Olivia. Although Goldwyn stated that his character is going through a rough patch following the break up, his focus is now on establishing a good legacy as he wraps up the final term of his presidency.
“He is not pining at all. I think he is in tremendous pain but it is all pushed down. He is very focused on his legacy, and on accomplishing what he has been trying to accomplish as president without all the noise, so that is very good… It is not bad for Fitz to be alone. It’s painful. It’s something he’s never had to do before.”
Abby is the one person Fitz has turned to in his pain this season on Scandal. While Goldwyn did not reveal whether or not his character will reunite with Olivia, he did admit that part of his closeness to Abby is because of her connection to Olivia.
“… part of the reason he stays tight with Abby is because of that relationship she has with Olivia. I don’t think that Fitz is remotely over Olivia.”
Meanwhile, Olivia has definitely moved on with her life after leaving Fitz. According to Design & Trend, this includes re-establishing her former relationship with Jake Ballard (Scott Foley). While Olivia has tried her best to keep her romance with Jake a secret, Huck recently figured it out. The only problem is that Jake is currently living and working with Olivia’s father, Rowan (Joe Morton), which doesn’t sit well with Olivia Pope and Associates.
“Jake is living with your father. He is still being controlled by your father. He killed someone to become head of the NSA because your father told him to do it… Do you honestly think that’s where it ends? That your father’s finished? When has that man ever been finished, Liv?”
According to the Christian Post, the upcoming episode, titled “Wild Card,” will see Olivia growing more skeptical about Jake’s larger goals and intentions. Now that Jake has been promoted to a new position, Olivia is curious about his schemes and what he plans to implement as the new chief of the NSA. Exactly where that leads Olivia is unknown, though it is safe to assume that Jake will not remain in good standing with the other characters for very long.
The fifth season of Scandal continues Thursday nights on ABC.
