‘Outlander’ Star Sam Heughan Claims There Will Be ‘More Backstabbing And Darkness’ In Season 2
The second season of Outlander is only months from its premiere, and Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan are already opening up about what’s to come. While the first season focused on the growing love between Jamie and Claire, but the actors promised that the new season will be quite different for the time traveling couple.
TV Guide recently interviewed the on-screen pair and asked about the changes in season two. For his part, Heughan described how the new setting is both familiar and different for their characters, and that new challenges will create more “backstabbing and darkness” than was present in the first season.
“We both found this world to be just about familiar but unsettling,” Heughan revealed. “It’s less weapons. It’s more politics, more backstabbing and darkness. There are some pretty dangerous characters involved.”
According to Movie News Guide, the second season of Outlander will see Jamie and Claire venturing off to Paris, France. The main goal of their trip is to infiltrate the political scene in 18th century France and prevent the Jacobite Rebellion.
In order to do this, Jamie and Claire will need to create alliances with French nobles and military leaders. Not only will this prove difficult to accomplish, but it will also put the couple in more than one dangerous situation. In fact, Balfe went on to reveal that Claire’s mouth gets her in trouble before they even get off the boat in France. While the majority of the season will take place in this new setting, Claire will go back to her own time at some point in the season. Claire’s journey will reunite her with Frank (Tobias Menzies) but also pose challenges in her relationship with Jamie, whom she leaves behind during her short trip.
In fact, in the trailer released via Entertainment Weekly, Claire is heard promising Jamie that she will always find her way back to him no matter what happens. Exactly how this turns out for the two is yet to be seen, though there is little doubt that Frank will complicate things for Claire.
In addition to the brand new setting, the second season of Outlander will also introduce a number of exciting characters. This includes Jamie and Claire’s daughter, Brianna. Sophie Skelton has been cast to play the character and is expected to play a large role in Season 2.
At the same time, it has been announced that Richard Rankin will portray Roger Wakefield in the new season. Roger was adopted by Reverend Wakefield and will be featured as his adult self in Season 2.
According to Access Hollywood, Outlander’s cast will grow ever larger as more and more characters are introduced throughout the season. A lot of these characters are French nobles, with whom Claire and Jamie will need to mingle with in order to accomplish their mission. These cast members include the likes of Stanley Weber as Comte St. Germain, Lionel Lingelser as Louis XV, Frances de la Tour as Mother Hildegarde, Laurence Dobiesz as Alex Randall, Rosie Day as Mary Hawkins, Andrew Gower as Bonnie Prince Charlie, Dominque Pinon as Master Raymond, and Robert Cavanah as Jared Fraser.
With so many cast members set to join the second season of Outlander, fans can expect a number of interesting twists and surprises before it’s all over. Fortunately, the drought is almost over with the premiere of Outlander now less than two months away.
Outlander’s upcoming season is based on the second book in the best selling series by Diana Gabaldon, A Dragonfly in Amber.
