Frozen Is Heading To Broadway
Frozen has become a favorite movie for families since its release in 2013. Disney has built Frozen into a multi-billion dollar empire – the first movie alone made 1.28 billion dollars globally. It has become such a sensation that there was even a short film created called “Frozen Fever” in 2015.
With Frozen more popular than ever, the movie is now on its way to Broadway. It will officially open in the spring of 2018 according to E! Online.
Frozen will be the ninth Disney movie to make its way to the Broadway stage, following, The Lion King, Aladdin, Newsies, Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid, and Tarzan.
Disney has taken no shortcuts in planning and they have hired creators with numerous awards – including Bob Crowley who is a seven-time Tony award winner according to Latin One. The original writers of the music in Frozen will also be helping with the Broadway version of the show.
Since 2014, the CEO of Disney has been planning on moving Frozen to the stage. Disney workers have been making preparations to make this a big hit since then. In 2015, over a dozen new songs were written for the Broadway version of Frozen according to The New York Times. The sequel announcement has excited everyone who is a part of the production and the entire cast cannot wait to get back into their characters and bring Arendelle back to life.
There will be a pre-Broadway engagement in the summer of 2017, most likely to see how the critics regard Frozen in this new venue. Disney is making this a big deal and wants Frozen to be as big as The Lion King on Broadway. Disney has already hired the directors, choreographers, musicians and lighting specialists and done all the backstage planning that is needed. Casting for the play will be announced later on, but you can follow the whole story as it develops – Disney’s theatrical group has a Twitter account called “Frozen on Broadway” where they will be tweeting the progress of their Broadway show to keep all their fans updated.
Frozen has more going on beyond heading to Broadway, too! They have also started working on Frozen 2 and will also be filming a television special to air on ABC. Many of the actors who played the voices of our favorite characters will be coming back in the television special including Kristen Bell, Josh Gad, and Idina Menzel. And not only will Frozen be on Broadway, but the Broadway version will also be written as a book. Frozen will be airing on The Disney Channel this week, and Frozen characters Anna, Elsa, and Kristoff were featured in the hit television series Once Upon A Time in 2014 – the same year Frozen on Ice went on tour. Frozen seems primed to become Disney’s next Lion King, as you can see signs of it everywhere you look!
The movie was a huge success and the sequel is promising just as much excitement for the fans – adults love the Frozen empire every bit as much as the kids do. Frozen has been a big hit for Disney and they will continue to grow the idea as long as it’s popular with their fan base.
The news of Frozen heading to Broadway is still very new and there will be more information released as more planning gets underway. Disney’s Frozen is only getting bigger as the empire continues to grow in popularity with seemingly no end in sight!
