Bryan Fuller Says ‘Hannibal’ Could Return For Season 4

Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller recently teased the fans with a small piece of information: Fuller hasn’t given up on resurrecting the show — he just needs to find a home for the critically acclaimed prime-time series. So far, NBC has pulled the plug, and Amazon and Hulu turned it down. Even so, Bryan is hopeful that Hannibal will find a new network and is making plans to write Season 4 in anticipation in 2017.

Carter Matt posted that Bryan Fuller is actively trying to find Hanibal a new network home, and he is so confident he will find one that he decided to move forward with plans to write Season 4. When he finds a home, they can begin filming right away. Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal Lecter) and Hugh Dancy (Will Graham) have stated on multiple occasions that providing Hannibal finds a new network; they would be honored to continue to film the series.

Hannibal developed a following by attracting their audience with the creative and artistic visions with a tad bit of gruesome murders thrown in the mix. Fans tuned in each week as they waited to see what kind of original death would happen next and to see if Lecter was able to send Will into total madness. The show itself was a masterpiece, and for once, the series finale was perfectly orchestrated.

Hannibal ended with Lecter and Graham battling the Red Dragon and fighting him until he died. The fight was an intense fight and nearly cost both Hannibal and Will their life. The last scene showed Hannibal and Will embrace, as they plunge down a cliff in each other’s arms. Bryan Fuller didn’t state if they survived the fall — he just previewed that he had, at least, one more season in the works.

For the sake of series integrity, the show must go on. As all Fannibals well know, Hannibal Lecter lives to a ripe age, as that’s when the story was originally introduced in The Silence of the Lambs. As you recall, Hannibal Lecter (played by Anthony Hopkins) was in his 60s at least in the film. Bryan Fuller used this point several times since the series finale to state that for this reason alone, he believes the series should continue.

Let’s assume the show returned for a short season of four to six episodes, it would not burden the actors, and they could continue to work on other projects. On the same token, it could accommodate Bryan Fuller’s schedule as he continues to work on his series American Gods. The real questions are not if Hannibal will return, it is when and on what network. Amazon previously turned down the series. However, Fuller has made a few comments that have made the fans question if they had reconsidered.

Ecumenical News noted that Hannibal executive producer Martha De Laurentiis has been outspoken about her desire to turn the series into another feature film. The fans, known as Fannibals, want a Season 4 and think Will Graham deserved a better ending. Bryan Fuller stood with the fans and stated he is actively pursuing a digital platform (Amazon, Netflix, or Hulu) to air Season 4.

“There is something in the novel ‘Hannibal’ that has not been done in any of the adaptations and I would love to explore that with Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter. I’m hoping that someday, whether it’s a year from now… two years from now… that we will continue to get to tell that story. I feel like if Will Graham did survive that plunge, his most interesting chapter is yet to be told.”

Fuller also said that he feels the series could use a rebirth of a sort to make it fresher and more appealing. Bryan thanked his loyal followers for holding on to the thread of hope that Hannibal may return, and he credits their dedication to the show as his reason for pushing so hard to find Hannibal a home.
