Will Danny DeVito Voice Pikachu In Nintendo’s ‘Detective Pikachu: Birth Of A New Duo’? [Video]
What rodent is short, yellow, fluffy, and full of electricity? Danny DeVito, of course!
Nintendo recently released a trailer for their upcoming new Pokémon game.
Pikachu Detective: Birth of a New Duo is set to be released on February 3 for the Nintendo DS. It’s a different take on the Pokémon games that fans have come to know and love. The game follows Pikachu and his human companion as they solve crimes in a city that houses both humans and Pokémon in harmony.
As of right now, the game is only set to come out in Japan. If Nintendo is considering going through with a world-wide release for Pikachu Detective: Birth of a New Duo, they haven’t let fans in on the possibility. That hasn’t stopped some fans from speculating about what would happen if the game reached the U.S.
The trailer seen above is in Japanese, but that doesn’t hide the fact that Pikachu has a much deeper voice than expected by fans who’ve been watching the high-voiced rodent say its name over and over again since the 1990s. Perhaps that is what triggered the petition on Change.org that is asking Nintendo to secure Danny DeVito as the voice of the rodent for the English version of the game.
The petition is very clear in its purpose and only seems to be calling for Danny DeVito’s involvement. It can be argued that the petition is requesting an English version of Pikachu Detective: Birth of a New Duo by proxy, however.
“Get Danny DeVito to Voice the English Version of Detective Pikachu,” is the straightforward title of the Change.org petition. It’s followed up by a mere two-sentence description of what the petition is for.
“There are a number of us that feel as though Danny DeVito would be a prime fit for the voice acting role of the Detective Pikachu. We want to make this happen.”
As fans sign the petition, many are leaving comments explaining why they are voting for a Danny DeVito/Pikachu mix.
“Danny DeVito is a treasure of our generation,” writes Grant Ginsburgh of Williamsburg, VA. “He would be a perfect fit for the roll. Not only would his dulcid tones add a sense of mystery and edge to pikachu’s new talking variation, he could also provide mo-cap for the character with little to no scaling for size.”
“Look at that face. That attitude. The conviction,” Michael Aguirre of Orlando, FL, wrote. “Combine it with the diminutive stature of the character, and there’s only one voice that make that angry little shock rat work, and that’s Danny DeVito.”
Adam Canaan of Rochester, NY added that “when an opportunity like this walks by you don’t just let it keep walking, you grab that bull by the horns, wrestle it to the ground, and shout in its face, ‘FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY WE NEED DANNY DEVITO TO VOICE DETECTIVE PIKACHU!'”
“Huge Danny DeVito fan as well as Pokemon,” Daniel Smale of Kunkletown, PA began as he explained that Danny DeVito wasn’t necessarily his first choice initially. “At first I believed Danny wasn’t a good fit due to the childish nature of Pokemon. However there is a huge amount of older fans and Danny DeVito’s humor and sly comments could add a lot to the character of Detective Pikachu. Would really like to see a slightly more mature take on the Pokemon World and DeVito would be perfect.”
Many other fans have commented on the petition to get Danny DeVito to voice Detective Pikachu. In fact, at the time of this article, the petition had nearly 36,000 signatures.
