Screen Actors Guild Awards Tonight — More Diverse Than 2016 Academy Award Nominees
The 22nd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be airing tonight at 8 p.m. EST on TBS and TNT. However, unlike the Academy Award nominations, which did not recognize any actors or actresses of color, the nominees for this year’s SAG Awards appear to be more diverse. Beasts of No Nation, the Netflix film directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and starring Idris Elba and Abraham Attah, has been nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, along with Straight Outta Compton. Elba has been nominated for his performance in the film as well. Trumbo, the Dalton Trumbo biopic starring Bryan Cranston as the title character, has earned the most SAG nominations this year.

Viola Davis, star of How To Get Away With Murder and David Ayer’s upcoming Suicide Squad, is nominated for her performance in the Shonda Rhimes ABC drama. Rami Malek, an Egyptian actor, is nominated for an SAG Award for his performance on Mr. Robot.
The Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture could be a competition between Spotlight and The Big Short, according to GMA News Online, while E! Online reports that Christian Bale’s birthday is also today. So if the cast for The Big Short were to win, this would be a pretty great birthday present for the British actor formerly known as Batman, who turns 42 years old today.
