‘Criminal Minds’ Spoilers: Danny Glover To Guest Star In ‘Derek,’ Plus Could Cat Return?
Criminal Minds may have recently taken care of the Dirty Dozen hit men ring targeting Garcia, but is that storyline really over? Could someone make a return appearance? Plus, some recent casting news promises an intriguing episode ahead for one of the team.
First things first, when Criminal Minds Season 11 returned from its winter hiatus, so did Matthew Gray Gubler as Reid. As executive producer Erica Messer explained to TVLine, Reid’s absence was because Gubler had “an opportunity he didn’t want to pass up for the fall,” and he doesn’t have to be in every episode, according to his contract.
“Entropy” was an episode that featured him right in the middle of helping take down the hitmen ring targeting Garcia (and the reason she’s been in Witness Protection and unable to go home). In order to do so, the BAU first set Reid up as the exact kind of target for one of the hitmen, Cat Adams, and though she saw through him — his wedding ring looked new, when it shouldn’t have been — what followed was a game of cat-and-mouse, one that ended with her promising to remember his name for when she got out from behind bars.
But will Cat be back? Well, Aubrey Plaza told TVLine that she thinks that there’s reason for her to be, and doesn’t think it’s quite over for her and Reid. What she wants to see is “Spencer visiting [her] in jail, Hannibal Lecter style.” And hey, whether or not that’s even something that could or will happen, Plaza and Gubler played off each other so well in “Entropy” that it’s hard not to maybe want to see that at some point down the line.In fact, maybe that idea isn’t so crazy because even before that episode aired, Messer told TVGuide.com that it would only bring an end to the arc “to a degree,” likening it to “another head to [a] monster.”
“I won’t say it’s totally put to bed in this episode because we still have our 250th coming up, so I will leave it at that. It might not be as easy as they had hoped it would be. … You kind of breathe a sigh of relief and then by the time our 250th airs in March, there will be a new baddie in town. It’s sort of the aftermath of something like this.”
In the Criminal Minds Season 11 midseason premiere, the BAU had taken down the remaining hitmen in the ring. They got the Sniper, the Bomber, and Cat, and the Chemist poisoned himself. However, it’s not too hard to imagine that there could be more to a network like that, especially with a milestone episode coming up like 250. They obviously have to do something special for that.
In other Criminal Minds Season 11 news, TVLine has reported that Danny Glover will be appearing in episode 16, “Derek,” as Morgan’s father. Yes, the father who is dead, which means that there has to be something going on in Morgan’s life at the moment, and so it makes sense that Messer says “it’s an interesting role that he plays.” She also teases that “the reason Derek needs to call on this protector in this moment and work through some things is really beautifully written by Breen Frazier and directed by Thomas Gibson.”Furthermore, as for what to expect for Morgan in the second half of Criminal Minds Season 11, Messer also teased that there’s “a lot going on” with him and “he’s really taking up our emotional head space for a good chunk of this midseason stretch.”
Criminal Minds Season 11 airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on CBS.
