Malin Akerman On Single Parenthood And Life Post-Divorce

Malin Akerman is one optimistic person, and according to People, she thanks her dad for that.

“You put my dad in a pile of [cr*p] and he will find the positive in it. I get that from him. I think everything happens for a reason. You just figure out why and you find the silver lining.”

Akerman, the star of Showtime’s Billions, has used this ability to remain positive and find the silver lining since her divorce from Roberto Zincone.

Malin Akerman opened up about the divorce and how she has dealt with it.

“It was jarring at first. It takes a minute to move through the emotions. But there is a beautiful thing about relationships where you grow each other to a point where you can’t grow each other any more. You can’t control life. I roll with the punches. And ultimately, it’s like, ‘Where is the opportunity in this?’ And that’s been a nice way to look at it. Like, oh my God, I get to have so much special time with my son now.”

She enjoys parenting her son, Sebastian, and he travels to work with mom – even though that means flying to New York.

“He loves airplanes. And he’s been on sets since he was 3 months old. He’s been socialized from the get go!”

When it comes to her character on Billions, Lara Axelrod, Vogue reports that Malin Akerman has been channeling a bit of the character Cookie from Empire. Akerman’s character Lara can be incredibly outspoken.

“She isn’t someone who takes no for an answer. She’s a super-tough woman.”

Malin Akerman said that she can really relate to Lara and how she has struggled to get where she is in the world.

“We both come from modest means and learned to navigate a different social realm. For Lara, it’s high society, and for me it’s Hollywood. She is a survivor and has become a chameleon who can shift to fit into any situation, whether it be dinner with the queen or pizza with her friends back in Inwood.”

Malin Akerman even comments on Lara’s wardrobe and how it stays true to where she came from in life.

“I think wardrobe always completes a character. In Lara’s case, it’s staying true to where she came from, except now her T-shirts cost $100 instead of $10. She’s not nouveau riche, but instead more down to earth. [Eric and I] worked together to make sure that she was trendy while also true to the various hats she wears—including a mother, restaurant owner, and billionaire.”

Of course, with running around chasing a 2-year-old son and maintaining a full-time career, Malin Akerman has to find the time to take care of herself, something that isn’t easy. Akerman told the Los Angeles Times that she doesn’t need a personal trainer because she has a workout buddy who holds her accountable.

“Yoga, SoulCycle and the gym. CrossFit keeps your body guessing what you will do next so you are less apt to plateau… I don’t have a trainer but work out with a buddy. We push each other. If we are at different levels, we do different workouts but the same number of sets. I might lift 15 pounds and my friend 25. Working out with a buddy, I can’t cheat like I would doing circuit training by myself.”

It’s a good thing she has her life together, because Malin Akerman is a busy woman. She is even starring in Misconduct alongside Anthony Hopkins and Al Pacino.
