‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Cristina Yang Came Back For McDreamy’s Funeral, Will She Return Again?

Kevin McKidd (aka Dr. Owen Hunt) says that Dr. Cristina Yang was at Meredith’s side for Derek’s funeral on Grey’s Anatomy, and he has proof. In a photo released of the funeral of Dr. Derek Shepherd, there is a photo from the back of Meredith and Cristina, and while it wasn’t Sandra Oh but a stand-in, the intent of Shonda Rhimes was to show that Cristina Yang is still Meredith’s person.

According to the Inquisitr, Cristina Yang will be back, in at least a drop by capacity, to be of support to Meredith. It would make sense that Sandra Oh’s character would come back to Grey-Sloan Memorial to see Meredith and her ex-husband Owen in order to at least mend some fences.

Us Magazine is confirming via Kevin McKidd that Cristina Yang indeed attended the funeral of McDreamy.

“Cristina was there,” McKidd told TV Line. “I presume Sandra was busy and unavailable for that episode, which was the only reason why [the body double was used].”

Rhimes put the image of Cristina there to let viewers know that the bond has not been broken.

“That funeral sequence was meant to imply that Cristina was obviously there for Meredith,” he continued. “Her presence was felt.”

Design n Trend revealed that Sandra Oh hinted that she would love to come back to Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Cristina Yang and reconnect with Meredith.

“The show’s going to continue to go on and have its own life, and eventually it would have to come to a close. I’d love to come back,” she added.

But Oh confirms that when she left Grey’s Anatomy, it was the right time to go.

“Creatively, I feel like I gave it my all, and I feel ready to let her go. It’s such an interesting thing to play a character for so long and to actually gets the sense that she wants to be let go as well. Cristina wants to be let go, and I am ready to let her go,” she said.

Cinema Blend says that Sandra oh left on very good terms, and if she would like to return or if Shonda Rhimes would like her to return, it could happen.

“While I wouldn’t expect Kevin McKidd to be super in the know about the casting attempts the behind-the-scenes people get up to, we do know that Sandra Oh did not leave the ABC drama with any hard feelings. When she decided to get written off at the end of Season 10, showrunner Shonda Rhimes ultimately opted not to kill her off in a wild manner, as she has with some other characters. Instead, Cristina Yang spent one final afternoon in the hospital before saying goodbye to Meredith, waving to Owen and leaving her board position to Alex. She’s reportedly been working in Zurich in the time since, and it would have been easy enough to write in a throwaway line about Christina not being able to make it.”

It seems to most fans that Cristina Yang will be coming back for at least a brief visit or to make a truly final exit at some point. The one constant of Grey’s Anatomy is the friendship of Meredith and Cristina, so it seems that Rhimes does not want to give up on that.

There is no way to know for sure if Sandra Oh is coming back for a visit, but all signs point to yes.
