Mega Millions drawings take place in Atlanta, Georgia every Tuesday and Friday at 11 p.m., ET. Mega Millions is a multi-state lottery game and players must be 18-years-old in order to purchase a ticket. Some states do allow the purchase of Mega Millions tickets online. Most of these states require a subscription through your official lottery site. Residents in Georgia, Illinois, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Virginia, and New Hampshire should check with their local state lotteries to see if they can play Mega Millions online. Tickets are sold at various retail locations and most sales stop at 10 p.m. Check with your local retailer to determine what time you must purchase tickets by.
Mega Millions tickets cost $1.00, whereas Powerball tickets cost $2.00. Mega Millions and Powerball games are similar since both have very large jackpots that can grow to extreme amounts. With Mega Millions, you choose five balls with numbers ranging from 1-75 (white balls), then choose the Mega Ball (yellow ball) with a number between 1 and 15. You can also opt to let the computer pick your numbers with Easy Pick. You win the Mega Millions jackpot by matching all five white numbers and the yellow Mega ball. Odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are slightly better than the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot. Powerball jackpot odds are 1 in 292,201,338 and odds for winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 258,890,850.

Though Mega Millions is a multi state game, you need to follow the rules that govern your state lottery. This includes cashing in winning tickets in the same state where they were purchased. You can find a list of state lotteries that participate in Mega Millions here.
The Megaplier is used to double the earnings won when playing Mega Millions. Not all states offer the Megaplier, so check with your local state’s lottery department. For states that do allow the Megaplier, you can choose from 2x, 3xs, 4xs and 5xs. The Megapliers cost $1 per play. Like Powerball, there are nine ways to win Mega Millions. In addition to the jackpot, there are eight non-jackpot prizes. Those who match five white balls without the Mega Ball, win $1,000,000. This can really add up for those who use a Megaplier, as a 5xs Megaplier would turn that $1 million into $5 million. Those who match four white balls with the Mega Ball win $5,000. Again, this doubles with the Megaplier.
