Fans who watch the Zimbabwe vs. Zambia football match live online will see a Zambian team looking to better capitalize on its opportunities. In a match against the South African team Mamelodi Sundowns they had eight scoring chances but could only manage a draw.

“We are creating chances and in the first half alone, we had eight clear chances to score, more than we created in one-half alone in our 2-1 win against Angola,” coach George “Chicken” Lwandamina told New Zimbabwe. “Now we have to work at translating those chances into goals. We are solid all round and I am sure we will be ready and very competitive.”

Lwandamina said he expects a tough match, noting that both teams employ the same style of play.

“We play basically the same type of football, so I am expecting a tough opening match, but like I said, we need to turn chances into goals in all the matches that we play,” he said.

Those who watch the Zimbabwe vs. Zambia match will see if the Zimbabwe squad can come together just weeks after some big turmoil. In December, a newly elected board led by Phillip Chiyangwa decided to fire national coach Kalisto Pasuwa and the entire technical team. Then, within days, the country’s sports minister Makosini Hlongwane intervened and the Zimbabwe Football Association reinstated Pasuwa.

Hlongwane said that he was afraid the interference would hurt the team’s preparation.

“Appointing a new technical team with only a few days left to participate in the Chan finals may derail the preparations of the Warriors, since the new technical team will need time to acquaint itself with the task at hand,” said Hlongwane in a statement (via the BBC).

“Football is a game of the people, a national project, a national asset and due care must be taken when making decisions that have the potential to destroy the rhythm of the game.”

There was plenty of turmoil leading up the Pasuwa’s sacking. The manager had been working without a contract and hadn’t been paid for five months. But he still managed to bring good results, including a six-game unbeaten streak for the senior team and a berth in the African Games for the under-23 team.

The team suffered an even bigger strategy at the start of the new year. The Zimbabwean-born player Abel “Shadow” Sebele was killed in a car accident in the United States. He had been playing for the San Diego Sockers after moving to the U.S. in 2005, Voice of America news reported.

“We are extremely shocked and saddened by this news,” said the club’s manager, John Kentera.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Sebele family. We will forever remember Shadow for his great smile and the kindness with which he treated everyone.”

The Zambian team has seen some turmoil as well. The team’s assistant coach, Irfan Kawri, left the team at the African Nations Championship to return to the United Kingdom. He had been appointed in December after Fighton Simukonda was dropped from the team.

He left just three days after the team arrived in Rwanda for the tournament, Super Sport reported.

“Assistant coach Irfan Kawri has returned to Lusaka from where he will proceed to go back to his England base,” the Football Association of Zambia said in a statement.

The FAZ did not say why Kawri left the team.

“Coach George Lwandamina and Kawri informed the squad of the private reasons,” Faz stated. “Lwandamina hailed Kawri’s work and greater contribution to the preparation of the Chan team.”
