WWE Rumors: Kofi Kingston And The New Day Introduce New Rule For ‘Royal Rumble’
Throughout the last year, The New Day have been one of the most dominating forces in WWE and all of wrestling. The WWE Tag Team Titles have been in their possession for most of the year and they’ve been involved in some of the biggest angles and storylines. Now, the Royal Rumble is quickly approaching and they may have brought forth a new rule that could really work to their advantage.
One of the biggest things about the rumble match is that anyone can face off with anyone. Friend against friend. Foe against foe. Teammate against teammate. Over the years, fans have seen the members of Demolition, The Rockers, the New Age Outlaws, and many other teams battle it out with their tag partners.
Well, all three members of The New Day are likely to join the rumble match, and it could lead to them having to face each other, but then again, maybe not.
Currently, all three members of The New Day are recognized as tag team champions under the “Freebird Rule.” It’s a rule that was introduced by the Fabulous Freebirds and states that any two of the three members can wrestle as tag team champions in matches.
Some instances will even allow for all three members to compete once in a match, but that is more of a rare occurrence. WWE gives some examples of teams that have used it in the past.
Kofi Kingston recently had an interview the Caller Times where he discussed a number of topics including having fun with The New Day. He then speaks on the Royal Rumble and how the Freebird Rule could possibly apply to the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
“If one of us wins, we got that ‘New Day’ rule. Holla holla!”
With him saying that, it appears as if Kingston feels as if all three members of The New Day will be considered the WWE Champion if one of them wins the title. It’s an interesting thought, and one that has never really been presented before.
Over the years, there have been new rules and regulations brought into wrestling and all of sports. One of them was named after another famous tag team when the New Age Outlaws helped create “The Outlaw Rule.”
As What Culture reminded everyone, the rule came about back in June of 1998. The Outlaws were in a triple threat match for their WWE (then WWF) Tag Team Titles against the Legion of Doom 2000 and the Disciples of Apocalypse. The rules in this match is that two wrestlers would be in the ring at any tie and could tag anyone else they wanted.
At one point, members of LOD and DOA tagged in both members of the New Age Outlaws and figured they would have to fight one another. Doing the smart thing, Road Dogg laid down almost immediately and allowed Billy Gunn to pin him which allowed them to retain their titles.
Now, “The Outlaw Rule” states that a tag match cannot be won by pinning your own partner.
With The New Day, if they draw numbers close enough to one another in the rumble match, then they could work together throughout. If the “New Day Rule” is something that ends up coming into existence, it would be to their great advantage when coming to the rumble and WWE Title.
The Royal Rumble is just three weeks away, and The New Day is likely going to have a big presence in the match. It’s not out of the question that one of them could win the match, face the WWE World Champion, win the title, and get all of their names in the record books.
