RallyCross Crash: Toomas Heikkinen Injured At X Games [Video]
Toomas Heikkinen, a 21-year-old Finnish RallyCross driver, was taken to hospital on Friday night after a dramatic crash at the X Games.
Heikkinen drove his Ford Fiesta off of a 50-foot jump but didn’t quite make it to the other side. The RallyCross driver was a little low on the entry and slammed into the steel support beams.
According to GrindTV, Heikkinen suffered a fractured left ankle in the crash. The driver also complained about head, chest, abdomen, and back pain. Heikkinen was treated at the scene and then taken to the hospital for a CT scan. According to an X Games spokesperson, no other injuries were revealed.
The video below shows the RallyCross driver crashing into the steel beams of the 50-foot jump. The video cuts out, however, but his car bursts into flames. According to ESPN the car was badly damaged in the crash and caught fire after Heikkinen escaped from the wreck.
This is Toomas Heikkinen’s first year at the X Games. He was the Finnish Rallycross champion in 2010 and last year he took sixth overall in the 2011 European Rallycross Championship. He is not expected to compete in the X Games RallyCross finals on Sunday.
