TomKat Divorce Update: Katie Filed, Asks For Sole Custody Of Suri, Alleged “Nastiness”
We just reported that after five years of marriage, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are calling it quits. We’ve now learned that Katie is the one who filed, and that she wants sole custody of the couple’s daughter.
The original report had Katie’s lawyer Jonathan Wolfe remaining ambiguous regarding couple’s decision to divorce, simply stating, “This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family,” adding that, “Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.” Now, TMZ has obtained more details into the matter, specifically that it was Katie who asked for the divorce, that Tom was “blindsided” by the request, and that Katie is seeking sole legal custody and “primary residential custody” of the couple’s 6-year-old daughter, Suri.
Katie filed divorce papers in New York on June 28, citing “irreconcilable differences,” and planning on asking for a “suitable amount” of child support.
The couple reportedly to have a prenup, based on California law. How this will affect Katie’s requests is unknown at this point.
This definitely comes as a surprise to Cruise, who was very recently singing his soon-to-be-ex-wife’s praises:
“She is an extraordinary person, and if you spent five minutes with her, you’d see it. Everything she does, she does with this beautiful creativity. She has a voice and warmth as an artist, as a mother. She’s funny and charming, and when she walks into the room, I just feel better,” he said of Holmes, 33. “I’m a romantic. I like doing things like creating romantic dinners, and she enjoys that. I don’t know what to say – I’m just happy, and I have been since the moment I met her. What we have is very special.”
Now, Tom “did not see this coming,” and there is some implied “nastiness” as evidenced by Katie’s request for sole custody of Suri.
